Steering Column: Notes

Special Tool(s)

CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
NOTE: If removing the intermediate shaft only, proceed to item seven in the removal procedure.
  1. Remove the driver air bag module. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
  2. If removing the steering column, remove the steering column opening trim cover and reinforcement.
  3. If removing the steering column, remove the multifunction switch. For additional information, refer to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES .
  4. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustration and table.

    Component Steps
    Steering wheel 1-6
    Steering column 1-11
    Steering column release motors 1-17
    Intermediate shaft 7, 8, 18-21

  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
