CAUTION: When repairing the power steering system, care should be taken to prevent the entry of contaminants or premature failure of the power steering components can result.
CAUTION: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Place the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position and remove the ignition key.
    • Rotate the steering wheel until the steering column locks into position.
  3. Using a suitable suction device, drain the power steering fluid reservoir.
  4. NOTE: New tie-rod end nuts must be installed. Remove and discard the 2 tie-rod end nuts.
  5. Using the special tool, separate the tie-rod ends from the wheel knuckles.

  6. Remove the intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt.
    • Position the steering gear boot upward.
  7. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
  8. Remove the power steering pressure line fitting.
  9. Remove the power steering return line fitting.
  10. NOTE: New Teflon® seals must be installed any time the lines are disconnected from the steering gear.

    Remove and discard the 2 Teflon® seals.

  11. Remove the 2 steering gear-to-crossmember nuts.
  12. Remove the 2 stabilizer bar link nuts.
  13. Position the stabilizer bar upward.
  14. Remove the steering gear from the left side of the vehicle.
  15. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Install 2 new Teflon® seals to the power steering pressure and return lines.
    • Fill the power steering system. For additional information, refer to STEERING SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
