Fuel Tank Draining

  1. Lower the windows and remove the hard top or lower the convertible top.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to CHARGING SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
  3. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  in this article.
  4. Insert the special tool into the fuel tank filler pipe until it reaches the fuel tank spout.

  5. NOTE: This step will drain approximately 1/8 of the tank of fuel and the fuel tank filler pipe when the fuel tank is full.
  6. Attach the Fuel Storage Tanker to the Fuel Drain Hose and partially drain the fuel tank and any residual fuel remaining in the fuel tank filler pipe.
  7. NOTE: Right side shown, left side similar.
  8. Remove the rear trim panel.
    1. Pull out on the inboard edge to release the retainers and remove the speaker grille.
    2. Pull out to release the retaining clips and remove the rear trim panel.

  9. Position the rear carpeting or insulation covering the fuel pump (FP) module and the fuel transfer pump access covers aside.

  10. Remove the FP module and the fuel transfer pump access covers.

  11. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel transfer pump.

  12. Loosen the right fuel tank support strap approximately one inch.

  13. Loosen the left fuel tank support strap approximately one inch.

  14. Using the special tool, remove the fuel transfer pump lock ring.

  15. Using the special tool and the fuel storage tanker, drain the fuel from the LH side of the fuel tank.

  16. Disconnect the electrical connector on the fuel delivery module.

  17. Using the special tool, remove the fuel delivery module lock ring.

  18. Using the special tool and the fuel storage tanker, drain the fuel from the RH side of the fuel tank.
