Fuel Tank Draining

- Lower the windows and remove the hard top or lower the convertible top.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to CHARGING SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
- Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE in this article.
- Insert the special tool into the fuel tank filler pipe until it reaches the fuel tank spout.
- Attach the Fuel Storage Tanker to the Fuel Drain Hose and partially drain the fuel tank and any residual fuel remaining in the fuel tank filler pipe.
- Remove the rear trim panel.
- Pull out on the inboard edge to release the retainers and remove the speaker grille.
- Pull out to release the retaining clips and remove the rear trim panel.
- Position the rear carpeting or insulation covering the fuel pump (FP) module and the fuel transfer pump access covers aside.
- Remove the FP module and the fuel transfer pump access covers.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel transfer pump.
- Loosen the right fuel tank support strap approximately one inch.
- Loosen the left fuel tank support strap approximately one inch.
- Using the special tool, remove the fuel transfer pump lock ring.
- Using the special tool and the fuel storage tanker, drain the fuel from the LH side of the fuel tank.
- Disconnect the electrical connector on the fuel delivery module.
- Using the special tool, remove the fuel delivery module lock ring.
- Using the special tool and the fuel storage tanker, drain the fuel from the RH side of the fuel tank.
NOTE:
This step will drain approximately 1/8 of the tank of fuel and the fuel tank filler pipe when the fuel tank is full.
