Main Control and Pump: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING .
  2. NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive shift strategy.
  3. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  4. Loosen the clamps and remove the air cleaner tube.

  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING .

  6. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
    1. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector.
    2. Disconnect the transaxle electrical connector.
    3. Disconnect the speed control electrical connector.

  7. Remove the wiper arm and pivot assembly. For additional information, refer to WIPERS AND WASHERS .
  8. Remove the passenger compartment air intake box.

  9. Remove the air intake tube.

  10. Remove the front upper radiator shield.

  11. Remove the hood latch and position aside.

  12. Remove the oil filler cap.

  13. Install the special tool (front of engine compartment).

  14. Install the special tool (rear of engine compartment).

  15. Install the special tools.

  16. Remove the upper main control cover bolts.

  17. Remove the rear transaxle support insulator bolt, nut and support insulator.

  18. Remove the rear transaxle support insulator bracket.

  19. Remove the remaining bolts and the main control cover.

  20. CAUTION: Do not pull on the wires or the electrical connectors. Damage to the connectors will result.

  21. Lift the locking tab and disconnect the electrical connectors.
  22. Position the transaxle wiring harness aside.
  23. CAUTION: Do not remove the 2 bolts that hold the pump assembly and main control valve body together as the pump assembly may fall from the main control valve body and become damaged.
    CAUTION: Only 4 of the 6 bolts need to be removed.

  24. Remove the bolts. Note the size and location of the bolts.
  25. Disconnect the manual linkage.
  26. Remove the main pump assembly and the main control valve body by carefully sliding it off the pump shaft.
