Cylinder Head: Disassembly

    NOTE: One lifting eye shown, other lifting eye similar.
  1. Remove the bolts and the 2 lifting eyes.

  3. Remove and discard the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor.

  5. Remove the bolts and the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve.

  7. Remove the EGR tube.

  9. Remove the spark plugs.

    CAUTION: Note the location of the tappets prior to removal.
  11. Remove the 16 tappets.

  13. Using the special tools, compress the valve spring and remove the valve spring retainer keys, the valve spring retainers and the valve springs.

  15. Inspect the valve spring, valve spring retainer and valve spring retainer key. For additional information, refer to ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION article.
  16. CAUTION: Note the location of the valves if they are to be reused.
    NOTE: Mark each valve if the original valves are to be used.
  17. Remove the valves.

  19. Using the special tools, remove and discard the valve seals.

  21. Inspect the valves. For additional information, refer to ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION article. Install new parts, as necessary.
