Steering Column: Disassembly

  1. Remove the steering column. For additional information, refer to Steering Column .
  2. Remove the shift selector pin.
  3. Remove the shift selector lever assembly.
  4. Remove the steering column lock housing bearing snap ring.
  5. CAUTION: Carefully note the position of the steering column lock gear, bearing, and retainer prior to removal.
  6. Remove the steering column lock housing bearing.
  7. Remove the steering column lock gear.
  8. Remove the steering column lower bearing spring.
  9. Remove the 2 bolts and the rotation sensor and bracket.
  10. Remove the rotation sensor ring.
  11. Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring.
  12. Remove the 2 lock cylinder housing pivot screws.
  13. WARNING: The steering column position spring is under tension and can come out with great force. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
  14. Remove the steering column position spring.
    1. Using a shop fabricated tool, release the steering column locking levers.
    2. Carefully remove the steering column position spring from the steering column.

  16. Remove the lock cylinder housing.
  17. Remove the steering column upper bearing spring snap ring.
  18. Remove the steering column upper bearing spring.
  19. Remove the steering column bearing sleeve.
  20. Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring.
  21. Remove the steering column shaft.
  22. Using a suitable drift, remove the upper and lower steering column bearings from the lock cylinder housing.
  23. Remove the 3 transmission shift position insert bolts.
  24. Remove the transmission shift position insert.
  25. Remove the brake shift interlock solenoid.
  26. Remove the 4 shift tube clamp bolts.
  27. Remove the 2 shift tube clamps.
  28. Remove the 2 transmission shift arm bolts.
  29. Remove the transmission shift arm.
  30. Remove the gearshift lever spring.
  31. Remove the gearshift lever pin.
  32. Remove the gearshift lever.
  33. Remove the column shift selector lever plunger.
  34. Remove the 2 gearshift lever socket bushings.
  35. Remove the transmission control selector lever spring clip.
  36. Remove the shift tube.
  37. Remove the steering column lock lever pin.
  38. Remove the steering column lock pawl.
  39. Remove the 2 ignition switch bolts.
  40. Remove the ignition switch.
  41. Remove the 3 steering column lower bearing retainer bolts.
  42. Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer.
  43. Remove the steering column lower bearing.
  44. Remove the steering column lock actuator.
