Steering Column: Disassembly
- Remove the steering column. For additional information, refer to Steering Column .
- Remove the shift selector pin.
- Remove the shift selector lever assembly.
- Remove the steering column lock housing bearing snap ring.
- Remove the steering column lock housing bearing.
- Remove the steering column lock gear.
- Remove the steering column lower bearing spring.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the rotation sensor and bracket.
- Remove the rotation sensor ring.
- Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring.
- Remove the 2 lock cylinder housing pivot screws.
- Remove the steering column position spring.
- Using a shop fabricated tool, release the steering column locking levers.
- Carefully remove the steering column position spring from the steering column.
- Remove the lock cylinder housing.
- Remove the steering column upper bearing spring snap ring.
- Remove the steering column upper bearing spring.
- Remove the steering column bearing sleeve.
- Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring.
- Remove the steering column shaft.
- Using a suitable drift, remove the upper and lower steering column bearings from the lock cylinder housing.
- Remove the 3 transmission shift position insert bolts.
- Remove the transmission shift position insert.
- Remove the brake shift interlock solenoid.
- Remove the 4 shift tube clamp bolts.
- Remove the 2 shift tube clamps.
- Remove the 2 transmission shift arm bolts.
- Remove the transmission shift arm.
- Remove the gearshift lever spring.
- Remove the gearshift lever pin.
- Remove the gearshift lever.
- Remove the column shift selector lever plunger.
- Remove the 2 gearshift lever socket bushings.
- Remove the transmission control selector lever spring clip.
- Remove the shift tube.
- Remove the steering column lock lever pin.
- Remove the steering column lock pawl.
- Remove the 2 ignition switch bolts.
- Remove the ignition switch.
- Remove the 3 steering column lower bearing retainer bolts.
- Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer.
- Remove the steering column lower bearing.
- Remove the steering column lock actuator.
CAUTION:
Carefully note the position of the steering column lock gear, bearing, and retainer prior to removal.
WARNING:
The steering column position spring is under tension and can come out with great force. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
