Steering Column: Assembly

    NOTE: Apply multi-purpose grease to the contact surfaces of the steering column lock actuator.
  1. Install the steering column lock actuator.
  2. NOTE: The UP position of the bearing must be facing forward, toward the engine.

    The numbering and description of components are for correct bearing orientation and not for an assembly order.

    NOTE: Install the steering column lower bearing and sleeve so that the inner race is visible when installed.
  3. Install the steering column lower bearing.

    2 3517 Bearing (in the UP position)
    3 - Ball
    4 - Inner race

  5. Install the steering column lower bearing retainer.
  6. Install the 3 steering column lower bearing retainer bolts.
    • Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  7. Install the ignition switch.
    • Align the ignition switch with the slot and index mark on the steering column.
  8. Install the 2 ignition switch bolts.
    • Tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  9. NOTE: Apply multi-purpose grease to the friction surfaces of the steering column lock pawl.
  10. Install the steering column lock pawl.
  11. Install the steering column lock lever pin.
  12. Install the shift tube.
  13. Install the transmission control selector lever spring clip.
  14. NOTE: Apply multi-purpose grease to the friction surfaces of the gearshift lever socket bushings.
  15. Install the 2 gearshift lever socket bushings.
  16. NOTE: Apply multi-purpose grease to the friction surfaces of the column shift selector lever plunger.
  17. Install the column shift selector lever plunger.
  18. Install the gearshift lever.
  19. CAUTION: The gearshift lever pin must be installed with the tapered end up or first gear position may be blocked.
  20. Install the gearshift lever pin.

    NOTE: Apply multi-purpose grease to the gearshift lever spring.
  22. Install the gearshift lever spring.
  23. Install the transmission shift arm.
  24. Install the 2 transmission shift arm bolts.
    • Tighten to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft).
  25. Install the 2 shift tube clamps.
  26. Install the 4 shift tube clamp bolts.
    • Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  27. Install the brake shift interlock solenoid.
  28. Install the transmission shift position insert.
  29. Install the 3 transmission shift position insert bolts.
    • Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  30. CAUTION: Install the upper steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.
  31. Using an appropriate bearing installer, install the steering column upper bearing on the steering column lock cylinder housing.

    CAUTION: Install the large steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.
    NOTE: The numbering and description of components are for correct bearing orientation and not for an assembly order.
    NOTE: Use an appropriate bearing installer.
  33. Install the steering column lower bearing into the steering column lock cylinder housing.

    4 - Bearing (in the UP position)
    5 - Ball
    6 - Inner race

  35. Install the steering column shaft.
  36. Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring.
  37. Install the steering column bearing sleeve.
  38. Install the steering column upper bearing spring.
  39. Install the steering column upper bearing spring snap ring.
  40. Install the lock cylinder housing.
  41. WARNING: The steering column position spring is under tension and can come out with great force. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
  42. Install the steering column position spring.
    1. Using a shop fabricated tool, release the steering column locking levers.
    2. Carefully install the steering column position spring to the steering column.

    NOTE: Apply lubricant to the pivot surfaces of the lock cylinder housing pivot screws.
  44. Install the 2 lock cylinder housing pivot screws.
    • Tighten to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft).
  45. Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring.
  46. Install the rotation sensor ring.
  47. Position the rotation sensor and bracket and install the 2 bolts.
    • Tighten to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).
  48. Install the steering column lower bearing spring.
  49. Install the steering column lock gear.
  50. CAUTION: Install the bearing retainer firmly to engage the 4 retention tabs into the lock housing using the previously made index marks.
  51. Install the steering column lock housing bearing.
  52. Install the steering column lock housing bearing snap ring.
  53. Install the shift selector lever assembly.
  54. Install the shift selector pin.
  55. Install the steering column. For additional information, refer to Steering Column .
