Steering Gear: Assembly
- If a new steering gear is being installed, mount the steering gear in the special tool.
- Install the inner tie rods.
- Tighten to 100 Nm (74 lb-ft).
- Position new inner clamps on the bellows boots.
- Position both bellows boots and the air tube on the steering gear. Make sure the air tube is correctly inserted into the bellows boots.
- Using the special tool, tighten the bellows boot inner clamps.
- Install the bellows boot outer clamps and the tie-rod jam nut.
- Install the power steering hose bracket and the bolts.
- Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Remove the steering gear from the special tools.
- Install the bolts using a plastic or rubber mallet.
CAUTION:
Hold the steering gear rack with an adjustable wrench when installing the inner tie rods to absorb the rotational force. Damage to the steering gear can occur.
NOTE:
Inspect the bellow boots. Install new bellows boots if torn or cracked.
NOTE:
To prevent the bellows boots from twisting during toe adjustment, apply long-life grease to the groove in the inner tie rods and uniformly to the inner diameter of the tie-rod bellows.
