Main Control and Pump: Removal
- Place the transaxle range selector lever in the PARK position.
- Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
- Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and the breather tubes.
- Remove the engine air cleaner and intake tube.
- Remove the air filter assembly.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Remove the power steering line bracket.
- Remove the electrical connector bracket.
- Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor connector.
- Install the engine lifting bracket on the RH (back) side of the engine.
- Install the engine lifting bracket on the LH (front) side of the engine.
- Remove the 6 upper bolts from the transaxle side pan.
- Raise the vehicle. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
- Remove the LH wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to WHEELS AND TIRES article.
- Remove the 5 LH front inner fender splash shield retainers.
- Remove the LH transaxle support and insulator. For additional information, refer to Transaxle Support Insulator .
- It will be necessary to lower the left side of the subframe to remove the pan through the wheel well.
- Install the special tools.
- Remove the LH lower ball joint nut.
- Using the special tools, disconnect the LH ball joint from the lower arm.
- Remove the 2 nuts and disconnect the front stabilizer bar links.
- Position the boot out of the way.
- Remove the bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft coupling. Discard the bolt.
- Loosen the RH front engine mount nut.
- Loosen the 2 subframe bolts on the RH side and remove the 2 subframe bolts on the LH side, using screw jacks support and lower the subframe to access the transmission pan.
- Remove the 9 transaxle side pan bolts and remove the transaxle side pan and gasket.
- Lift the locking tab and disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Position the transaxle wiring harness aside.
- Remove the bolts.
- Disconnect the manual linkage.
- Remove the main pump assembly and the main control valve body by carefully sliding it off the pump shaft.

CAUTION:
Use extreme care not to damage boot seal. Do not use power tools to tighten the nut, or bearing and seal damage can result. Install nut using the hex hold feature to prevent the stud from rotating.
CAUTION:
Do not pull on the wires or the electrical connectors. Damage to the connectors will result.
CAUTION:
Do not remove the 2 bolts that hold the pump assembly and main control valve body together as the pump assembly may fall from the main control valve body.
CAUTION:
Only 4 of the 6 pump cover bolts need to be removed.
