Engine Front Cover: Removal

CAUTION: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
  3. Remove the degas bottle. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
  4. Loosen the 4 coolant pump pulley bolts.
  5. Remove the generator. For additional information, refer to GENERATOR AND REGULATOR article.
  6. Remove the crankshaft front seal. For additional information, refer to Lower End Components - Exploded View, Crankshaft Pulley and Crankshaft Front Seal  and Crankshaft Front Seal .
  7. Remove the oil pan. For additional information, refer to Engine Lubrication Components - Exploded View, Oil Pan, Oil Pan Baffle and Oil Pump  and Oil Pan  .
  8. Remove the nut and the generator support bracket.
  9. Disconnect the lower radiator and heater hose from the coolant pump.
  10. Remove the accessory drive belt idler pulley.
  11. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  12. Remove the bolt, nut and the A/C compressor bracket.
  13. Remove 4 bolts and the coolant pump pulley.
  14. Remove the 5 bolts, 5 stud bolts and the engine front cover and coolant pump as an assembly.
    • Remove and discard the front cover gasket.
