Shift Point Road Test

This test verifies that the shift control system is operating correctly.

  1. Bring the engine and transaxle up to normal operating temperature.
  2. Operate the vehicle with the selector lever in Overdrive (Circle D) range.
  3. NOTE: Shift speed ranges are approximate for all applications. For specific applications (engine, axle ratio and application), refer to the Automatic Transmission Specification Issue available from Ford Customer Service Division.
  4. Apply minimum throttle and observe the speeds at which upshift occurs and the torque converter engages using the shift speeds chart.

      OD, D 2-1 42 26
  5. Stop the vehicle and move the selector lever to D range. Repeat Step 3. Transaxle will make all upshifts except 3-4 and the torque converter clutch apply should occur above 39 km/h (24 mph).
  6. With the vehicle speed above 39 km/h (24 mph), press the accelerator pedal to the floor, wide-open throttle (WOT). Transaxle should shift from 3rd to 2nd, or 3rd to 1st, depending on the vehicle speed. The torque converter clutch should release.
  7. With vehicle speed above 48 km/h (30 mph), move the selector lever from D range to 1 range (LOW) and remove foot from the accelerator pedal. Transaxle should immediately downshift to 2nd gear. When the vehicle speed drops below 24 km/h (15 mph), the transaxle should downshift into 1st gear.
  8. If the transaxle fails to upshift/downshift or the TCC does not apply and release, refer to Diagnosis By Symptom  for possible causes.
