Test procedure

  1. AG1 PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS 
    • Carry out a visual inspection.
    • Retrieve and record any continuous and on-demand diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
    • Record the freeze frame data.
    • Clear the DTCs.
    • Carry out the KOEO self-test.

    Are any DTCs retrieved? 

    Yes No
    For DTC P2122, P2127, P2132, GO to  AG2.
    For DTC P2123, P2128, P2133, GO to  AG7.
    For DTC P2138, P2139, P2140, GO to  AG12.
    For DTC P2104, GO to  AG15.
    Unable to duplicate the condition. CHECK for a loose connection, and damaged or corroded terminals. WIGGLE the harness attempting to recreate the concern. REPAIR as necessary. REFER to NO DTCS PRESENT SYMPTOM CHART INDEX , if a driveability concern exists.
  2. AG2 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) P2122, P2127, AND P2132 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the APP1, APP2 and APP3 PIDs.
    • Apply and release the accelerator pedal.

    Do all signal values change when the accelerator is applied and released? 

    Yes No
    Unable to duplicate the condition. CHECK for a loose connection, and damaged or corroded terminals. WIGGLE the harness attempting to recreate the concern. REPAIR as necessary. REFER to NO DTCS PRESENT SYMPTOM CHART INDEX , if a driveability concern exists. GO to  AG3.
  3. AG3 CHECK THE VREF SENSOR CIRCUITS 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • APP Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
    (+) APP Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) APP Sensor Connector, Harness Side
    VREF - Pin 6, 7 SIGRTN - Pin 1, 3

    Are the voltages between 4.5 - 5.5 volts? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AG4. GO to Pinpoint Test B .
  4. AG4 CHECK THE APP SENSOR OPERATION 
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
      Point A APP Sensor Connector, Harness Side Point B APP Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      VREF - Pin 6 APP1 - Pin 2
      VREF - Pin 6 APP2 - Pin 5
      VREF - Pin 6 APP3 - Pin 8
    • Access the PCM and monitor the APP1, APP2 and APP3 PIDs.

    Are the voltages between 4.5 - 5.5 V? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new APP sensor. REFER to the appropriate, Acceleration Control to INSTALL a new accelerator pedal.
    CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to  AG5.
  5. AG5 CHECK THE APP SENSOR SIGNAL FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
    (+) APP Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
    APP1 - Pin 2 APP1 - Pin B26
    APP2 - Pin 5 APP2 - Pin B37
    APP3 - Pin 8 APP3 - Pin B25

    Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AG6. REPAIR the open circuit. CLEAR the DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
  6. AG6 CHECK THE APP SENSOR SIGNAL FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between:
    (+) APP Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
    APP1 - Pin 2 Ground
    APP2 - Pin 5 Ground
    APP3 - Pin 8 Ground

    Are the resistances greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AG18. REPAIR the short circuit. CLEAR the DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
  7. AG7 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) P2123, P2128, AND P2133 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the APP1, APP2 and APP3 PIDs.
    • Apply and release the accelerator pedal.

    Do all the signal values change when the accelerator is applied and released? 

    Yes No
    Unable to duplicate the condition. CHECK for a loose connection, and damaged or corroded terminals. WIGGLE the harness attempting to recreate the concern. REPAIR as necessary. REFER to NO DTCS PRESENT SYMPTOM CHART INDEX , if a driveability concern exists. GO to  AG8.
  8. AG8 SIMULATE THE OPPOSITE SIGNAL 
    NOTE: The APP sensor is disconnected to simulate the opposite DTC.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • APP Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the APP1, APP2 and APP3 PIDs.

    Do all PID signal values read 0 volts? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AG11. GO to  AG9.
  9. AG9 CHECK THE APP SIGNAL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
    (+) APP Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
    APP1 - Pin 2 Ground
    APP2 - Pin 5 Ground
    APP3 - Pin 8 Ground

    Are the voltages less than 0.2 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AG10. REPAIR the short circuit. CLEAR the DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
  10. AG10 CHECK THE APP SIGNAL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure the resistance between:
    (+) APP Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
    APP1 - Pin 2 Ground
    APP2 - Pin 5 Ground
    APP3 - Pin 8 Ground

    Are the resistances greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AG18. REPAIR the short circuit. CLEAR the DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
  11. AG11 CHECK THE APP SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance between:
    (+) PCM Connector, Harness Side (-) APP Sensor Connector, Harness Side
    SIGRTN - Pin B20, B33 SIGRTN - Pin 1, 3

    Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new APP sensor. REFER to the appropriate, Acceleration Control to INSTALL a new accelerator pedal.
    CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    REPAIR the open circuit. CLEAR the DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
  12. AG12 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) P2138, P2139, AND P2140 
    • Clear the DTCs.
    • Carry out the KOEO and KOER self-test.

    Are DTCs P2138, P2139 or P2140 present? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AG13. Unable to duplicate the condition. CHECK for a loose connection, and damaged or corroded terminals. WIGGLE the harness attempting to recreate the concern. REPAIR as necessary. REFER to NO DTCS PRESENT SYMPTOM CHART INDEX , if a driveability concern exists.
  13. AG13 CHECK THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY FOR BINDING 
    • Apply the accelerator pedal slowly to the floor and release.

    Does the accelerator pedal move to the floor and return without binding? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AG14. INSTALL a new APP sensor. REFER to the appropriate, Acceleration Control to INSTALL a new accelerator pedal.
    CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  14. APP SENSOR SIGNAL VOLTAGE RANGES 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the APP1, APP2 and APP3 PIDs.
    • Apply the accelerator pedal slowly to the floor and release.
    APP SENSOR SIGNAL VOLTAGE RANGES

    Pedal Position APP1 APP2 APP3
    CT 3.43 - 4.69 1.13 - 1.88 0.64 - 1.28
    WOT 0.73 - 1.28 3.03 - 4.55 2.59 - 3.89

    Are the PID voltage values within the range specified in the table? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AG18. INSTALL a new APP sensor. REFER to the appropriate, Acceleration Control to INSTALL a new accelerator pedal.
    CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  15. PID VOLTAGE VALUES 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the APP2 and APP3 PIDs.
    • Slowly apply and release the accelerator pedal while observing the PID voltage values.
    PID VOLTAGE VALUES

    Pedal Position APP2 APP3
    Released (Closed Throttle) 1.13 - 1.88 0.64 - 1.28
    Fully Applied (Wide Open Throttle) 3.03 - 4.55 2.59 - 3.89

    Are the PID voltage values within the range specified in the table? 

    Yes No
    Unable to duplicate the condition. CHECK for a loose connection, and damaged or corroded terminals. WIGGLE the harness attempting to recreate the concern. REPAIR as necessary. REFER to NO DTCS PRESENT SYMPTOM CHART INDEX , if a driveability concern exists. GO to  AG16.
  16. AG16 CHECK THE APP SENSOR 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • APP Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
    (+) APP Sensor Connector, Component Side (-) APP Sensor Connector, Component Side
    APP1 - Pin 2 APP3 - Pin 8

    Is the resistance between 2.7K - 6.5K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AG17. INSTALL a new APP sensor. REFER to the appropriate, Acceleration Control to INSTALL a new accelerator pedal.
    CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  17. AG17 CHECK THE APP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUITS 
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
    (+) APP Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) APP Sensor Connector, Harness Side
    APP1 - Pin 2 APP3 - Pin 8

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AG18. REPAIR the short circuit. CLEAR the DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
  18. AG18 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Visually inspect for:
      • pushed out pins
      • corrosion
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY (EEPROM) , Programming the VID Block for a Replacement PCM. The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
