Steering Gear: Installation

    NOTE: When installing a new steering gear, install a new steering gear turn tube heat wrap.

  1. Position the steering gear and tighten the 4 steering gear bolts to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft) in the sequence shown in the illustration.
  2. NOTE: Install a new banjo bolt and seals any time the power steering pressure line is disconnected from the steering gear, or a fluid leak may occur.
  3. Install the new pressure line-to-steering gear banjo bolt and seals.
    • Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  4. Release the clamp and connect the return hose to the steering gear.
  5. Position the return hose and install the 4 return hose bracket bolts.
    • Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  6. Position the steering gear heat shield and the 2 steering gear heat shield bolts.
    • Tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  7. Position the stabilizer bar downward to the original position.
  8. Raise the subframe and align the subframe with the marks made during removal.
  9. Install 2 new middle subframe nuts.
    • Tighten to 133 Nm (98 lb-ft).
  10. Install 2 new forward subframe nuts.
    • Tighten to 133 Nm (98 lb-ft).
  11. Position the subframe brackets and the crossbrace and loosely install the subframe bracket nuts and bolts.
    1. Tighten the subframe bracket nuts to 133 Nm (98 lb-ft).
    2. Tighten the subframe bracket bolts to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).
  12. Clean the roll restrictor-to-subframe bolt using a wire brush and apply new threadlock to the threads.
  13. Install the roll restrictor-to-subframe bolt.
    • Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
  14. Position the roll restrictor heat shield and install the nuts.
    • Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  15. Connect the outer tie-rod ends to the wheel knuckles and install 2 new nuts and cotter pins.
    • Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  16. NOTE: Use the holding feature to prevent the ball stud from turning while installing the stabilizer bar link nuts.
  17. Connect the stabilizer bar links to the stabilizer bar and install 2 new stabilizer bar link nuts
    • Tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).
  18. Install the exhaust Y-pipe. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM
  19. Install the power steering fluid cooler-to-subframe bolt.
    • Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-In).
  20. Attach the lower bumper to the subframe and install the 3 RH subframe-to-lower bumper nuts and washers.
    • Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-In).

  21. Install the 3 LH subframe-to-lower bumper nuts and washers and separate the bumper from the subframe.
    • Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-In).

  22. Position the lower radiator air deflector and install the 3 pin-type retainers and the 7 screws.
  23. Install the RH front fender splash shield. For additional information, refer to FRONT END BODY PANELS
  24. WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).
  25. Connect the steering column shaft to the steering gear and install a new steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  26. Install the front wheels and tires. For additional information, refer to WHEELS & TIRES
  27. Fill the power steering system. For additional information, refer to STEERING SYSTEM
  28. Check and, if necessary, adjust the front toe. For additional information, refer to SUSPENSION SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION
