Test Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2012 Ford Pickup, 2012 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2012 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2012 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. QH1 PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Carry out the instrument cluster self-test.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test.

    Are any DTCs present?

    Yes No
For instrument cluster DTCs, REFER to the appropriate Instrumentation, Message Center, and Warning Chimes article, Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) DTC Chart, to continue diagnosis.
For additional PCM DTCs, GO to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHARTS AND DESCRIPTIONS .
    GO to  QH2.
  2. QH2 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FUELLEVEL PID
    • Access the IC (IPC) and monitor the FUELLEVEL (PER) PID.
    • Record the FUELLEVEL PID value.
    • Compare the instrument cluster FUELLEVEL PID recorded value to the instrument cluster fuel gauge.

Does the instrument cluster FUELLEVEL PID correspond to the fuel gauge level?

    Yes No
GO to  QH3. REFER to the appropriate Instrumentation, Message Center, and Warning Chimes article to continue diagnosis of the fuel level.
  3. QH3 CHECK THE PCM FLI PID
    • Access the PCM and monitor the FLI (PER) PID.
    • Record the FLI PID value.
    • Compare the PCM FLI PID recorded value to the instrument cluster FUELLEVEL PID recorded value.

Does the PCM FLI PID correspond to the instrument cluster FUELLEVEL PID?

    Yes No
Unable to duplicate the condition. CHECK for a loose connection, and damaged or corroded terminals. WIGGLE the harness attempting to recreate the concern. REPAIR as necessary. REFER to NO DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) PRESENT SYMPTOM CHART INDEX , if the driveability concern exists. GO to  QH4.
  4. QH4 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Visually inspect for:
      • pushed out pins
      • corrosion
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test.
    • Verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present?

    Yes No
INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY (EEPROM) . The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
