Inspection and Verification
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2006 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
If equipped with fire suppression system, refer to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM
for Important Safety Warnings.
WARNING:
When repairing starter motor or carrying out other underhood work in the vicinity of the starter motor, be aware that the heavy gauge battery input lead at the starter solenoid is "electrically hot" at all times. A new protective cap or boot, which is provided over the terminal of this lead must be installed after repairs. Be sure to disconnect battery ground cable before servicing starter.
WARNING:
When working in area of the starter motor, be careful to avoid touching hot exhaust components.
- Verify the customer concern by operating the starting system.
- Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage; refer to the following chart.VISUAL INSPECTION CHART
Mechanical Electrical - Starter motor
- Starter solenoid
- Brackets
- Battery
- Fuse
- Damaged wiring harness
- Loose or corroded connections
- If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
- If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
- check that the program card is correctly installed.
- check the connections to the vehicle.
- check the ignition switch position.
- If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
- Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
- Appropriate communication networks, such as SCP, ISO, UBP, CAN circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .
- No response/not equipped for generic electronic module (GEM), REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES .
- System passed, RETRIEVE and RECORD the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the GEM.
- If there are diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) that are available, VERIFY the DTC and GO to STARTER AND PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX .
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved GO to SYMPTOM CHART .
