Seat Backrest Front: Disassembly

WARNING: Always carry a live airbag with the deployment door, trim cover or tear seam pointed away from the body. Do not place a live airbag down with the deployment door, trim cover or tear seam facing down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats equipped with seat side airbags cannot be repaired. A new trim cover must be installed. Cleaning is permissible. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side airbag deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
NOTE: If a side air bag deployment took place, a new seat backrest foam pad, backrest cover, deployment chute and side air bag module and nuts must be installed. The seat backrest frame should be replaced if necessary.

All seats 

  1. 1.

    Remove the seat backrest. Refer to Seat Backrest - Front .

  1. 2.

    Remove the 2 head restraint guide sleeves. Refer to Head Restraint Guide Sleeve .

  1. 3.

    Remove the backrest panel.

    1. 1.

      Pull out at the bottom on each side, quickly and firmly, releasing the retainers.

    1. 2.

      NOTE: The clips in the middle of the backrest panel can be damaged if the bottom of the backrest panel is not pivoted away from the seat.

      Pivot the bottom of the backrest panel out as far as it will go and slide the backrest panel down, disengaging the upper hooks.

      • Remove the backrest panel.

  1. 4.

    Disengage the 2 J-clips from the backrest wires and remove the carpet flap toe-kick.

  1. 5.

    Release the backrest cover hook-and-loop strips near the bottom and at the sides.

  1. 6.

    Release the backrest cover hook-and-loop strips and J-clip attached to the recliner.
    • Repeat for the other side.

  1. 7.

    Disengage all accessible backrest cover J-clips.

All seats except limo or livery 

  1. 8.

    Remove the backrest Thermo-Electric Device (TED).

    1. 1.

      Disconnect the electrical connector and separate the pin-type retainer from the backrest frame.

    1. 2.

      Disengage the backrest TED from the backrest foam pad wire.

    1. 3.

      Disengage the backrest TED from the backrest frame wire and remove the backrest TED.

All Seats 

  1. 9.

    Release all remaining backrest cover J-clips attached to the backrest frame.

  1. 10.

    Disengage the retainer and open the deployment chute.

  1. 11.

    Remove the backrest frame from the backrest foam pad and backrest cover assembly.

All seats except limo or livery 

  1. 12.

    Separate the side air bag module wire harness retainers from the backrest frame.

  1. 13.

    Remove the nuts and the side air bag module with wire harness.

  1. 14.

    Remove the power lumbar assembly in the following sequence.

    1. 1.

      Disconnect the 2 power lumbar motor electrical connectors.

    1. 2.

      Remove and discard the 2 clips at the top of the power lumbar assembly retaining it to the backrest frame wire.

    1. 3.

      Release the 2 retainers at the bottom of the power lumbar assembly.

    1. 4.

      Remove the power lumbar assembly.

Limo or livery seats 

  1. 15.

All seats 

  1. 17.

    NOTE: Do not rotate the recliner motor or recliner motor shafts until the long shaft is connected to the short shaft and sleeve. Failure to do so will cause the inboard and outboard recliners to become out of synchronization.

    Remove the E-clip on the recliner shaft and the recline motor bolt.

  1. 18.

    Release the 2 clips (one shown) and slide the sleeve back on the recliner shaft.

  1. 19.

    Remove the power recline motor.

    1. 1.

      Slide the recliner shaft assembly out of the recliner and remove the short recliner shaft.

    1. 2.

      Remove the sleeve from the long recliner shaft.

    1. 3.

      Slide the long recliner shaft out of the recline motor.

    1. 4.

      Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the power recline motor.
      • If necessary, remove the long recliner shaft from the recliner.

  1. 20.

    NOTE: Note all wire harness routing for correct installation.

    Remove the backrest wire harness(es) from the backrest frame.

  1. 21.

    Remove the backrest cover from the backrest foam pad.
    • Inside out the backrest cover and remove all the hog rings.
