Section 144 (Engine): Disassembly: Engine: Disassembly

    CAUTION: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
    NOTE: For additional information, refer to the exploded view under Assembly .

  1. Remove the 8 bolts and the flexplate.
  2. Using the special tools, remove and discard the crankshaft rear oil seal.

  3. Mount the engine on a suitable stand.
  4. Freestyle only 

  5. If equipped, remove the 3 retainers and the A/C compressor pulley shield.

  6. All vehicles 

  7. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.

  8. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.

  9. Disconnect the LH catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector and detach the wiring retainer.

  11. If equipped, remove the 2 nuts, the bolt and the A/C compressor shield.

  14. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and the A/C compressor.

  15. Remove the 5 bolts and the A/C compressor bracket.

  16. Disconnect the LH heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector and detach the wiring retainer.

  17. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.

  18. Remove the 2 nuts, disconnect the camshaft position sensor (CMP) and detach the retainers.

  19. Loosen the fittings and remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system module tube.

  20. Disconnect the EGR system module electrical connector.

  21. Disconnect the throttle body electrical connector.

  24. Disconnect the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor vacuum tube and electrical connector.

  25. Disconnect the fuel charging wiring harness electrical connector.

  26. Disconnect the RH HO2S and detach the retainer.

  32. Remove the 8 bolts and the upper and lower intake manifold.
    • Remove and discard the gaskets.

  33. Remove the nut and position the wiring conduit aside.

  34. Disconnect the RH ignition coil electrical connectors and detach the wiring retainers.

  35. Remove the nut and disconnect the generator wiring.

  37. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) electrical connector and detach the wiring retainer.

  38. Disconnect the LH ignition coil electrical connectors and detach the wiring retainers.

  39. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor and the radio interference capacitor electrical connectors.

  40. Disconnect the bypass and the coolant pump hoses.

  41. Remove the engine wiring harness.
  42. Remove the stud bolt and the oil level indicator tube.
    • Remove and discard the O-ring seal.

  65. Use the special tool to hold the crankshaft damper and remove the bolt.

  68. Remove the bolt and the belt tensioner.

  69. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surface. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of sealant.
  70. Remove the stud bolt, 14 bolts and the front cover.
    • Remove and discard the gaskets.

  71. CAUTION: This pulse wheel is used in several different engines. Install the pulse wheel with the keyway in the slot stamped "30" or "30 RFF" only (orange in color).

  72. Remove the ignition pulse wheel.
  73. Install the damper bolt.

  75. Remove the LH and RH spark plugs.
  76. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to position the crankshaft keyway in the 11 o'clock position and position the camshafts in the correct position. This will position the No. 1 cylinder at top dead center (TDC).
    • Verify that the camshafts are correctly located. If not, rotate the crankshaft one additional turn and recheck.

  77. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise 120 degrees to the 3 o'clock position to locate the RH camshafts in the neutral position.

  78. Verify that the RH camshafts are in the neutral position.

  79. Remove the RH timing chain tensioner arm.
    1. Remove the 2 bolts.
    2. Remove the tensioner.
    3. Remove the tensioner arm.

  80. Remove the 2 bolts, RH timing chain guide and the timing chain.

  81. Rotate the crankcase clockwise 600 degrees (1-2/3 turns) to position the crankcase keyway in the 11 o'clock position. This will position the LH camshafts in the neutral position.

  83. Remove the LH timing chain and tensioner arm.
    1. Remove the 2 bolts.
    2. Remove the tensioner.
    3. Remove the tensioner arm.

  88. CAUTION: Cylinder head camshaft journal caps and cylinder heads are numbered to verify that they are assembled in their original positions.
    NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.
    NOTE: The camshaft caps have alignment dowels.
  89. Loosen the LH and RH camshaft cap bolts in the indicated sequence and remove the camshaft caps.
    • Tap the caps lightly with a soft-faced mallet to loosen the camshaft caps.

  90. Remove the LH and RH camshafts.
  91. CAUTION: The camshaft roller followers must be installed in their original positions.
    NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.
  92. Remove the LH and RH camshaft roller followers.
    • Mark the location of the roller followers using a permanent-type marker.

  94. Loosen the bolts in the indicated sequence and remove the LH and RH cylinder heads.
    • Remove and discard the gaskets and the bolts.

  95. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.
    CAUTION: Observe all warnings or cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging of the silicone gasket remover and the metal surface prep.
    NOTE: If there is no residual gasket material present, metal surface prep can be used to clean and prepare the surfaces.
  96. Clean the cylinder head-to-cylinder block mating surface of both the cylinder head and the cylinder block.
    1. Remove any large deposits of silicone or gasket material with a plastic scraper.
    2. Apply silicone gasket remover, following package directions, and allow to set for several minutes.
    3. Remove the silicone gasket remover with a plastic scraper. A second application of silicone gasket remover may be required if residual traces of silicone or gasket material remain.
    4. Apply metal surface prep, following package directions, to remove any traces of oil or coolant, and to prepare the surfaces to bond with the new gasket. Do not attempt to make the metal shiny. Some staining of the metal surfaces is normal.
  97. Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up.
  98. NOTE: The straightedge used must be flat within 0.0051 mm (0.0002 in) per foot of tool length.
  99. Inspect all areas of the deck face with a straightedge and feeler gauge. The cylinder head must not have depressions deeper than 0.0254 mm (0.001 in) across a 38.1 mm (1.5 in) square area, or scratches more than 0.0254 mm (0.001 in).
  100. Remove the 3 bolts and the power steering pump bracket.

  101. Remove the 2 bolts and the oil separator cover.
    • Remove and discard the gasket.
