Cruise Control: Description and Operation

Cruise Control

The cruise control system consists of the following components:

- Electronically-controlled throttle body

- Cruise control deactivator switch (part of the stoplamp switch)

- Cruise control indicator

- Cruise control switch(es)

- Stoplamp switch

- PCM

When the cruise control system is activated, a selected vehicle speed above 40 km/h (25 mph) to the maximum limited vehicle speed can be maintained without pressing the accelerator pedal. The cruise control system is controlled by the steering wheel mounted switches (ON, OFF, SET+, - and RES), and the brake pedal. The steering wheel mounted switches are hardwired to the PCM.

During normal driving, the vehicle speed may vary slightly from the set speed due to road conditions. The vehicle speed may vary or fluctuate when driving up and down a steep hill. If the vehicle speed decreases more than 16 km/h (10 mph) below the set speed, the cruise control disengages.
