Symptom Chart

Diagnostics in this information assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. Refer to Diagnostic Methods in SERVICE INFORMATION for information about these practices.

SYMPTOM CHART

Condition Possible Sources Action
  • The engine does not crank - Without IA
  • Refer to the Diagnostic Routine
  • The engine does not crank - With IA
  • Refer to the Diagnostic Routine
  • The engine cranks slowly
  • Battery
  • Battery cables
  • Wiring, terminals or connectors
  • Starter motor
  • CARRY OUT the Starter Motor - Feed Circuit and Starter Motor - Ground Circuit Tests. REFER to COMPONENT TESTS  .
  • Unusual starter noise
  • Refer to the Diagnostic Routine
  • The starter spins but the engine does not crank
  • Starter motor
  • Damaged flexplate
  • The starter does not disengage from the flexplate
  • Starter relay
  • Wiring, terminal or connectors
  • REMOVE the starter relay, if the engine stops cranking INSTALL a new relay. If the engine continues to crank, REPAIR circuit CDC25 (BN/GN) for a short to voltage.
  • The remote start is inoperative
  • Refer to the Diagnostic Routine
  • The remote start deactivates and turns OFF before required time out.
