Test Procedure

  1. TJ1 CHECK FOR SELF-TEST DTCS 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.

    Is DTC P0A3C present? 

    Yes No
    GO to TJ2  . Unable to duplicate the concern.
    RETURN to ENGINE CONTROLS - SYMPTOM CHARTS (HYBRID) , Symptom Charts for further direction.
  2. TJ2 VERIFY THE MOTOR ELECTRONICS COOLING SYSTEM (MECS) INTEGRITY 
    WARNING: ALWAYS ALLOW THE ENGINE TO COOL BEFORE OPENING THE COOLING SYSTEM. DO NOT UNSCREW THE COOLANT PRESSURE RELIEF CAP WHEN THE ENGINE IS OPERATING OR THE COOLING SYSTEM IS HOT. THE COOLING SYSTEM IS UNDER PRESSURE; STEAM AND HOT LIQUID CAN COME OUT FORCEFULLY WHEN THE CAP IS LOOSENED SLIGHTLY. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY.
    NOTE: Verify cooling fan operation before proceeding with this test.
    • Check the MECS for any loss of coolant or overheating concerns.

    Is a concern present? 

    Yes No
    REFER to the appropriate Electric Powertrain Cooling article, to diagnose a MECS concern. GO to TJ3  .
  3. TJ3 CHECK FOR TCM TEMPERATURE SENSOR CORRELATION 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the SOBDMC and monitor the G_PHTMP (TEMP) and M_PHTMP (TEMP) PIDs.
    • Road test the vehicle while monitoring the PIDs.

    Do both temperature PIDs indicate an over temperature condition? 

    Yes No
    REFER to the appropriate Engine Cooling article to diagnose a MECS concern. GO to TJ4  .
  4. TJ4 CHECK FOR CORRECT TCM OPERATION 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect all the TCM connectors.
    • Visually inspect for:
      • pushed out pins
      • corrosion
    • Connect all the TCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Carry out the SOBDMC self-test.
    • Verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new TCM.
    REFER to the appropriate Automatic Transmission article. REFER to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY (EEPROM) , Programming the TRID Block for a Replacement TCM.
    The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
