Removal and Installation

  1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to STEERING WHEEL  .
  3. Remove the steering column opening trim panel. For additional information, refer to the Instrument Panel - Exploded View in INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE .
  4. Remove the 4 bolts and the steering column opening reinforcement.
    • To install, tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).

  5. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds. For additional information, refer to STEERING COLUMN SHROUD  .
  6. Disconnect the following electrical connectors:
    • Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) transceiver
    • Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM)
    • Ignition switch
    • LH multifunction switch
    • RH multifunction switch
    • Clockspring
  7. Detach the 2 wiring harness retainers from the steering column.

  8. WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).
  9. Remove and discard the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
    • To install, tighten the new bolt to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).

  10. NOTE: Do not allow the steering column to rotate while the steering column shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring may result. If there is evidence that the steering column has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
  11. Disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering column.
  12. WARNING: Do not reuse steering column nuts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).
  13. Remove and discard the 3 steering column nuts.
    • To install, tighten the new nuts to 16 Nm (142 lb-in).
  14. Remove the steering column bolt and the steering column.
    • To install, tighten to 17 Nm (150 lb-in).
  15. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
