Test Procedure

  1. QA1 CARRY OUT A VEHICLE INSPECTION AND VERIFY THE SELF-TEST PROCEDURE 
    NOTE: For DTC U0284, GO to  QA15.
    NOTE: If the self-test or communication concern occurred after a failed or aborted reprogram, the module may be blank. Attempt to reprogram the module again before continuing with this pinpoint test.
    • Visually inspect the following for obvious signs of electrical damage:
      • harness wiring
      • electrical connections
    • Verify the correct procedure was used to activate the self-test for the scan tool. Refer to SCAN TOOL SET-UP AND FUNCTIONALITY .

    Was the correct self-test procedure used? 

    Yes No
    GO to QA2  . REFER to DIAGNOSTIC METHODS, SCAN TOOL SET-UP AND FUNCTIONALITY , to continue diagnosis.
  2. QA2 CARRY OUT THE NETWORK TEST 
    NOTE: When using Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS), the scan tool attempts to communicate with the PCM first. After establishing communication with the PCM, the scan tool then attempts to communicate with all modules on the vehicle. If an IDS session cannot be established, IDS may state no communication can be established with the PCM:
    • Choose No when the scan tool prompts whether or not to retry communication.
    • Enter a PCM part number, tear tag or calibration number to identify the vehicle and start a session. The PCM part number and 4-character tear tag are located on the PCM.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Carry out the network test.

    Do all modules indicate pass? 

    Yes No
    For DTC U0104, GO to  QA11.
    For DTC U0151, GO to  QA13.
    For DTC U0155, GO to  QA10.
    For DTC U0212, GO to  QA12.
    For DTCs P062C, U0121 or U0415, GO to  QA8.
    For DTCs U0101, U0293, U0402 or U1010, GO to  QA7.
    For all others, RETURN to ENGINE CONTROLS - SYMPTOM CHARTS (HYBRID) for further direction.
    If only the PCM indicates fail, GO to QA3  .
    For network test or all other modules indicates fail, REFER to the Module Communications Network article, Communication Network Symptom Chart, to continue diagnosis.
  3. QA3 CHECK THE ETCREF CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • ETB connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) ETB Connector, Harness Side (-) ETB Connector, Harness Side
      ETCREF - Pin 5 ETCRTN - Pin 4

    Is the voltage between 4.5 - 5.5 V? 

    Yes No
    REFER to the Module Communications Network article, Communication Network Symptom Chart, to continue diagnosis. GO to QA4  .
  4. QA4 CHECK THE ISP-R VOLTAGE AT THE PCM HARNESS CONNECTOR 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) PCM Connector, Harness Side (-)
      ISP-R - Pin B8 Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 10.5 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to QA5  . REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. QA5 CHECK THE PCM VPWR CIRCUITS FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
      Point A PCM Connector, Harness Side Point B
      PCMRC - Pin B1 Ground
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) PCM Connector, Harness Side (-)
      VPWR - Pin B11, B12 Ground

    Are the voltages greater than 10.5V? 

    Yes No
    GO to QA6  . GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
  6. QA6 CHECK THE PWRGND CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) PCM Connector, Harness Side (-)
      PWRGND - Pin B35, B36, B47, B48, T31 Ground

    Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    REFER to the Module Communications Network article, Communication Network Symptom Chart, to continue diagnosis. REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. QA7 CHECK FOR A SOBDMC CONCERN 
    • Check for any SOBDMC DTCs.
    • Check for other SOBDMC related symptoms.

    Is a concern present? 

    Yes No
    Go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHARTS AND DESCRIPTIONS . For DTC U1010, GO to  QA15.
    For all others, GO to  QA17.
  8. QA8 CHECK FOR AN ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE CONCERN 
    • Check for any ABS module DTCs.
    • Check for other ABS related symptoms.

    Is a concern present? 

    Yes No
    REFER to the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and Stability Control article to continue diagnosis. For DTC P062C, GO to  QA15.
    For all others, GO to  QA17.
  9. QA9 CHECK FOR A BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) CONCERN 
    • Check for any BCM DTCs.
    • Check for other BCM related symptoms.

    Is a concern present? 

    Yes No
    REFER to the Multifunction Electronic Modules article to continue diagnosis. GO to  QA17.
  10. QA10 CHECK FOR AN INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) CONCERN 
    • Check for any IPC DTCs.
    • Check for other IPC related symptoms.

    Is a concern present? 

    Yes No
    REFER to the Instrumentation, Message Center, and Warning Chimes article to continue diagnosis. GO to  QA17.
  11. QA11 CHECK FOR A CRUISE CONTROL MODULE (CCM) CONCERN 
    • Check for any CCM DTCs.
    • Check for other CCM related symptoms.

    Is a concern present? 

    Yes No
    Refer to the Cruise Control article to continue diagnosis. GO to  QA17.
  12. QA12 CHECK FOR A STEERING ANGLE SENSOR MODULE (SASM) CONCERN 
    • Check for any SASM DTCs.
    • Check for other SASM related symptoms.

    Is a concern present? 

    Yes No
    REFER to the Vehicle Dynamic Systems article to continue diagnosis of the SASM system. GO to  QA17.
  13. QA13 CHECK FOR A RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE (RCM) CONCERN 
    • Check for any RCM DTCs.
    • Check for other RCM related symptoms.

    Is a concern present? 

    Yes No
    REFER to the Supplemental Restraint System article to continue diagnosis. GO to  QA17.
  14. QA14 CHECK FOR A BATTERY ENERGY CONTROL MODULE (BECM) CONCERN 
    • Check for any BECM DTCs.
    • Check for other BECM related symptoms.

    Is a concern present? 

    Yes No
    REFER to the High Voltage Converter/Inverter article to continue diagnosis. GO to  QA17.
  15. QA15 CHECK FOR A PCM CONCERN 
    • Check for any other PCM DTCs.

    Is a concern present? 

    Yes No
    DISREGARD the current DTC at this time. DIAGNOSE the next DTC. Go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHARTS AND DESCRIPTIONS . For DTCs P062C or U1010, GO to QA16  .
    For all others, REFER to the Front End Body Panels article, to continue diagnosis of the grille shutter assembly.
  16. QA16 REFLASH THE PCM 

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes No
    For DTC P062C, REPROGRAM or UPDATE the ABS module Calibration. REFER to the Module Configuration article.
    For DTC U1010, REPROGRAM or UPDATE the TCM Calibration. REFER to the Module Configuration article.
    For all others, GO to QA17  .
    The system is operating correctly at this time.
  17. QA17 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Visually inspect for:
      • pushed out pins
      • corrosion
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Carry out the network test and verify the concern is still present.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test.
    • Verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new PCM.
    Refer to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY (EEPROM) , Programming the VID Block for a Replacement PCM.
    The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
