Steering Column: Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

    Remove the steering wheel. Refer to: Steering Wheel .

  2. NOTE: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the steering column shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring may result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, remove and recenter the clockspring.

    Secure the steering wheel.

  3. Remove the steering column shrouds. Refer to: Steering Column Shrouds .
  4. Remove the driver knee airbag. Refer to: Driver Knee Airbag .
  5. Remove the retainers and disconnect the steering column electrical connectors.

  6. NOTE: The deployable steering column electrical connector retaining tabs are not easily accessible. Using an inspection mirror and needle-nose pliers, or an equivalent tool, may help in viewing and releasing the electrical connector locking tabs.

    Disconnect the deployable column electrical connector.

  7. NOTE: Install a new steering column shaft bolt. Reuse could result in bolt failure and loss of vehicle control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

    Remove and discard the bolt. Disconnect the steering column shaft.

    Torque: 21 lb.ft (28 Nm)

  8. NOTE: Do not reuse steering column nuts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

    Remove and discard the bolts. Remove the steering column.

    Torque: 21 lb.ft (28 Nm)
