Pinpoint Tests A: PCM Replacement

The tools required for this test are:

  1. A1: CONFIRM THE PCM WAS REFERENCED BY THE SERVICE INFORMATION 
    • You should only be in the PCM replacement routine if you were directed here from the service information.
    • Were you referred here from the service information? 
    Yes No
    Go to  A2. REFER to the appropriate service information article to correctly diagnose the PCM.
  2. A2: DESCRIBE THE REASON FOR ENTERING THE PCM TEST 
    • Please explain how you were sent to this test and why.

    Go to  A3.

  3. A3: INPUT REQUIRED INFORMATION 
    • Input the required information in the provided fields below.

    Go to  A4.

  4. A4: TEST ENTRY REQUIREMENTS 
    NOTE: Low vehicle battery state-of-charge can affect this test. Battery state-of-charge can be monitored on the scan tool. A red battery icon indicates low vehicle battery state-of-charge.
    • Carry out the following steps:
      • Connect a battery charger and set the charge to the appropriate level based on the battery SOC.
      • Apply the parking brake.
      • If equipped with an automatic transmission, place the vehicle in Park (P).
      • If equipped with a manual transmission, place the vehicle in Neutral (N).
      • Connect the VCM to the IDS desktop or laptop (do not start IDS).

    Go to  A5.

  5. A5: CARRY OUT THE PCM ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST 
    NOTE: After the PCM self-test is complete, return to this step.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test.
    • Are any DTCs present? 
    Yes No
    If service information diagnostics for the PCM DTCs have not been carried out, REFER to Diagnosis and Testing in the appropriate service information.
    If service information diagnostics for the PCM DTCs have already been carried out prior to entering this test, Go to  A6.
    Go to  A7.
  6. A6: IDENTIFY THE PCM DTC 
    • * - Indicates Mandatory Field
    • What is the PCM DTC that led to indicate the PCM?* Enter Value
  7. Go to  A9.

  8. A7 : CHECK OTHER MODULES FOR DTCS 
    NOTE: This step reads and then clears any continuous DTCs present.
    • Press Read Vehicle Information button to retrieve DTCs from the vehicle.
      NOTE: DTCs may be displayed from previous diagnostic actions.
    • Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs.
    • Is a module DTC present that led to indict the PCM?
    Yes No
    Go to  A8. REFER to the Engine Controls article Pinpoint Test Z - Intermittent.
  9. A8: IDENTIFY THE MODULE AND DTC 
    • * - Indicates Mandatory Field

    Which module set the DTC to indict the PCM?* Enter Value

    What DTC is present to indict the PCM?* Enter Value

    Go to  A9

  10. A9 : CHECK FOR APPLICABLE FORD SERVICE PUBLICATIONS, FSAS, TSBS AND SSMS 
    • Check for applicable Ford Service Publications, FSA's, TSB's and SSM's that apply to the vehicle, APIM and to the reported customer concern.
    • Are there any applicable Ford Service Publications, FSA's, TSB's and SSM's that apply to the reported customer concern?
      Yes No
      Follow the applicable Ford Service Publication, FSA, TSB or SSM directions and program the PCM as directed. Go to  A10.
  11. A10 : DESCRIBE THE FAILURE 
    • Which manual processes are failing during your diagnosis?
    • * - Indicates Mandatory Field
    • Please provide the symptom that led to the PCM replacement:* Enter Value

      Go to  A11

  12. A11 : PCM REPLACEMENT 
    • Test results: The results of the test show that the PCM failed.
    • For a Ford paid repair, obtain the PCM Replacement Repair Validation Code. This validation code is required to claim the PCM (part), the PCM R & I labor and the PCM test labor operations and must be included on the claim form.
    • INSTALL a new PCM.

      Order a replacement PCM and include the validation code on the form.

      If this is a Ford paid repair ensure that the PCM hardware test validation code is included on the claim form.

      When complete, close this procedure and return to the Service Information.
