Normal Operation

The PSCM runs a self test when the ignition is set to ON and the module is receiving at least 6 volts. The self test compares the software in the module to the steering gear hardware. If the 2 items are not compatible, the EPAS enters manual mode and sends a request to the IPC message center to alert the vehicle occupants and sends an EPAS _FAILURE message to other modules on the HS-CAN.
- Z1: REFLASH AND VERIFY THE PSCM DTC
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, make sure the PSCM is programmed (flashed) to the latest level of software. Follow all diagnostic scan tool instructions.
- Clear the PSCM DTCs.
- Ignition OFF.
- Wait at least 90 seconds for the modules to completely shut off.
- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs.
- Does the DTC return?
Yes No INSTALL a new EPAS gear.
CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA.
If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions.
If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new EPAS gear. REFER to the Power Steering article. ORDER a replacement PSCM and INCLUDE the RVC on the form.
If this is a Ford paid repair, INCLUDE the RVC on the warranty claim form.The condition causing the DTC is not present at this time.
