Steering Gear: Installation

  1. NOTE: Install the steering gear from the RH side of the vehicle.

    Position the steering gear.

  2. Rotate the EPAS gear towards the rear of the vehicle.

  3. NOTE: Hand start fasteners.

    Tighten new bolts following the sequence shown. Alternate stages LH to RH. Perform Stage 1 on both bolts, then Stage 2 on both bolts, then Stage 3. Install the new EPAS gear mounting bolts.

    • LH bolt.

      Torque: Stage 1: 37 lb.ft (50 Nm), Stage 2: 74 lb.ft (100 Nm), Stage 3: 184 lb.ft (250 Nm)

    • RH bolt.

      Torque: Stage 1: 177 lb.in (20 Nm), Stage 2: 74 lb.ft (100 Nm), Stage 3: 184 lb.ft (250 Nm)

  4. Position and clip the EPAS gear harness.

  5. If equipped.

    1. Position the oil filter drip shield and install the retainer.
    2. Install the retainer

      Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

  6. Connect the EPAS gear harness electrical connectors.

    1. Attach the steering column shaft coupler to the EPAS gear.
    2. Install the new steering column shaft bolt.

      Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  7. NOTE: Use the hex-holding feature to prevent turning of the stud while installing the tie rod end nut.

    1. On both sides. Attach the tie rod end to the wheel knuckle.
    2. On both sides. Install the new tie rod end nut.

      Torque: 52 lb.ft (70 Nm)

  8. On both sides. Position the stabilizer and install the new stabilizer bar bracket-to-front subframe retainers.

    Torque: 66 lb.ft (90 Nm)

  9. NOTE: Do not use power tools to install the stabilizer bar link nut. Damage to the stabilizer bar link ball joint or boot may occur.
    NOTE: To install the stabilizer bar link lower nut, use the Torx-Plus® holding feature to prevent the stabilizer bar link ball joint from turning while installing the stabilizer bar link lower nut.

    1. On both sides. Position the front stabilizer bar link.
    2. On both sides. Install the new front stabilizer bar link lower nut.

      Torque: 129 lb.ft (175 Nm)

  10. Install the RH steering gear splash shield and install the retainers.

  12. Remove the underbody shields. Refer to: Engine Front Undershield .
  13. Install the wheels and tires. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
  14. When installing a new steering gear, it must be configured (using vehicle as-built data or module configuration information retrieved earlier in this procedure). Refer to the scan tool instructions to carry out PMI. Refer to: Module Configuration - System Operation and Component Description .
  15. Check and if necessary, adjust front toe. Refer to: Front Toe Adjustment .

    Vehicles With: Active Park Assist 

  16. NOTE: Only on vehicles equipped with active park assist.

    Drive the vehicle above 50km/h (30 mph) for a minimum of 1 mile while maintaining the steering wheel in a straight ahead position with minimal steering input for at least 30 seconds. When completed correctly, the active park assist system is available when the active park assist switch is pressed. Repeat the process as necessary.
