Compression Test 2.3L

  1. Make sure the oil in the crankcase is of the correct viscosity and at the correct level and that the battery is correctly charged. Operate the vehicle until the engine is at normal operating temperature.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, then remove all the spark plugs. REFER to: Spark Plugs .

  3. NOTE: Whenever the turbocharger air intake system components are removed, always cover the open ports to protect from debris. It is important that no foreign material enter the system. The turbocharger compressor vanes are susceptible to damage even from small particles. Inspect and clean all the components prior to installation or assembly.

    Position the CAC.

    • Disconnect the quick release coupling and position aside the fuel vapor line.

    • Loosen the clamp and position aside the CAC outlet pipe.

  4. Remove the CAC.

    1. Release the CAC outlet pipe by spreading the retainer ends outward.
    2. Position the retainer ends in the notches locking the retainer in the open position and remove the CAC outlet pipe.

  5. Manually set the throttle plates to the wide-open position.
  6. Install a compression gauge in the No. 1 cylinder.
  7. Install an auxiliary starter switch in the starting circuit. With the ignition switch in the OFF position, and using the auxiliary starter switch, crank the engine a minimum of 5 compression strokes and record the highest reading. Note the approximate number of compression strokes necessary to obtain the highest reading.
  8. Repeat the test on each cylinder, cranking the engine approximately the same number of compression strokes.
  9. Install all the spark plugs. REFER to: Spark Plugs .

  10. Remove the CAC.

    1. Position back the CAC outlet pipe and release the retainer from the notches.
    2. Position back the retainer ends.

  11. Install the CAC.

    • Position back the CAC outlet pipe and tighten the clamp.

    • Connect the fuel vapor line.
