Engine Front Cover: Removal
NOTE:
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure.
NOTE:
This procedure is considered a major service repair. For Ford warranty coverage, the vehicle must be returned to the Multimatic vehicle assembly and repair facility.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist using the front and mid lift points. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Remove the bolts and the engine underbody cover.
- Lower the vehicle and position the hoist using the front and rear lift points and raise the vehicle. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .

NOTE: For a regular maintenance oil change, do NOT loosen or remove the plug located at the front right of the oil pan. This plug is used to bleed the oil cooling circuit. Removal of this plug without correctly bleeding the oil cooling circuit can cause air to enter the oil cooling circuit, resulting in damage to the engine.
- Remove the oil pan drain plug in the left front corner of the oil pan and drain the oil from the oil pan. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
- Remove the oil tank drain plug near the back of the oil pump and drain the oil from the oil tank. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
- Install the oil pan and oil tank drain plugs.
Torque: 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

NOTE: Use a Lisle® 61570 - 76 mm - 14 flutes end cap wrench.NOTE: Place a rag over the cross bar when removing the oil filter to catch drips from the oil filter.
Using a oil filter end cap wrench, remove and discard the engine oil filter.
- Remove the following items:
- Remove the LH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover LH .
- Remove the RH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover RH .
- Remove the crankshaft front seal. Refer to: Crankshaft Front Seal .

- Loosen the coolant hose fitting.
- Release the clamps and remove the coolant hoses.

- Remove the coolant hose retainer nut and bolt.
- Release the coolant hose retainer.
- Remove the coolant hose retainer nut.
- Release the clamp and position the coolant hoses aside.
- Remove the nut and position the coolant hoses and retainer aside.
- Remove the bolts and position the thermostat housing and hoses aside.
- Remove and discard the thermostat housing O-ring seal and gasket.
- Remove and bolts and the coolant pump.
- Remove and discard the coolant pump O-ring seal and gasket.
- Remove the bolt and the coolant pump belt idler pulley.
- Remove the bolts and the coolant pump belt idler pulley bracket.
- Remove the nuts and the coolant hose retainer bracket.
- Remove the engine front cover bolts.
- Using a pry tool on the pry pads shown, remove the engine front cover.
- Using the special tools, remove the engine front cover to coolant pipe seal and discard. Use Special Service Tool: 205-150 (T80T-4000-S) Installer, Spindle Bearing, 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle.
- Clean and prepare the RTV sealing surface. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation
