Shift Modes
Automatic Return to Park
The vehicle has a feature that automatically shifts the transmission into P when any of the following conditions are met at low speed:
- The ignition is turned off and vehicle falls below low speed threshold.
- Opening the driver door while the seat belt is unbuckled.
- Unbuckling the seat belt while the driver door is open.
Stay in Neutral Mode
If it is necessary for the vehicle to stay in N without the driver present, such as being pulled through a car wash, this mode disables Return to Park. In Stay in Neutral the system remains awake draining the battery if the engine is off. When you enter neutral at low speed Press M to Enter Stay in Neutral will be displayed. If the driver presses the M button within 5 seconds, the message Stay in Neutral Mode appears on the multifunction display. During this mode the N position on the GSM flashes continuously and the instrument cluster will display N as the selected gear. To exit Stay in Neutral Mode, shift out of N.
If the battery discharges while in Stay in Neutral Mode, the park lock pawl solenoid releases and transmission returns to P. Do not tow the vehicle in this mode. Neutral Hold exits 30 minutes after the ignition key is turned OFF resulting in transmission returning to P.
Emergency Tow Mode
Refer to: Emergency Park Position Release . for information on moving the transmission out of P with the engine off.
Return to Park
The vehicle returns to P when any of the following conditions are met:
- The vehicle is turned off.
- The vehicle is stopped, the driver door is open and the seat belt is unbuckled.
If the vehicle is turned off while moving, the transmission first shifts into N until it comes to a complete stop and then shifts into P automatically.

Park by Wire
- Uses a GSM with a electronic lever shifter in place of a mechanical shifter for selecting P, R, N, D, M.
- The transmission hydraulic controls are modified using a park lock pawl valve connected to the park rod which unlocks and locks the park pawl from the carrier.
- Uses clutch B and D hydraulic pressure to push the system out of Park.
- Once out of Park, clutches A, B, C, D or F can continue to hold the system out of Park.
- A park lock pawl solenoid allows the system to remain out of Park when the engine is not running.
- The dual TR sensors indicate the state of the Park system and are not used to determine customer selected range, which is now provided by the GSM.
- A mechanical P override has been provided for in-plant use and emergency towing. This consists of a cable running from the console to the transmission, a bracket and lever assembly mounted to the side of the transmission and a lever on the side of the transmission. In the override position the park lock pawl valve is held in the applied position to keep the park pawl unlocked from the carrier.
