Test NTC-2A - Checking Secondary Ignition & Timing

NOTE: Refer to manufacturer's operation manual for instructions in use of engine analyzer and procedure for pattern analysis.
  1. Turn engine off. Connect engine analyzer to engine. Start engine, and let it idle. If engine will not idle, maintain constant engine speed at more than idle. Set scope to read display or parade pattern. If secondary ignition pattern is not okay, repair indicated component in secondary ignition system and perform TEST VER-2A. If secondary ignition pattern is okay, go to next step.
  2. Remove any spark plug wire. Observe secondary kilovolt line. If open circuit secondary voltage is not at least 25,000 volts, replace ignition coil and perform TEST VER-2A . If open circuit secondary voltage is at least 25,000 volts, go to next step.
  3. Reinstall spark plug wire. Ensure engine temperature is more than 180°F (82.2°C) before proceeding. Go to next step.
  4. Using scan tool, read total timing advance. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM. If timing advance does not change with increase in RPM, replace PCM and perform TEST VER-2A. If timing advance changes with increase in RPM, secondary ignition system and timing advance are normal. Test passed.
