Steering Column: Inspection
- Inspect upper bracket. Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly. See Fig 1.
- If necessary, replace ignition key cylinder. Place the ignition key at the ACC position. Push down the stop key with a thin rod, and pull out the key cylinder. See Fig 2. Turn the ignition key plate to the ACC position, and install new key cylinder into the upper bracket.

- Inspect upper bearing. Check the upper bearing rotation condition and check for abnormal noise. See Fig 3. If the bearing is worn or damaged, replace the column tube assembly.

- Inspect lower bearing. Check the lower bearing rotation condition and check for abnormal noise. See Fig 4. If bearing is worn or damaged, replace the thrust stopper.

- Inspect key interlock solenoid, if necessary. Solenoid resistance should be 12.5-16.5 ohms.
- If necessary, replace key interlock solenoid. Using a screwdriver, remove E-ring and the cover. See Fig 5. Remove two screws and the solenoid. Install the solenoid with two screws. Install the cover and E-ring over the two springs.
