Anti-Lock Brake System: Operation

An ABS warning light, located on instrument panel, comes on for 3 seconds as a bulb test when ignition is turned on. A primary system check is performed after each engine start and when initial vehicle speed exceeds 4 MPH. Actuator noise, which is considered normal, will be heard as vehicle speed exceeds 4 MPH. If brake pedal is depressed before vehicle speed exceeds 4 MPH, primary check will not occur until brake pedal is released.

Under normal driving conditions, ABS system functions as a standard brake system. When wheel lock-up is detected, brake pedal may pulsate and steering wheel and vehicle body may vibrate, which is considered normal. Pulsation or vibration will continue until need for ABS function no longer exists or vehicle is stopped. Maintaining a constant force on brake pedal provides shortest stopping distance.
