Fuel Gauge Sending Unit Test

FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT RESISTANCE TESTS

Application Type (1) Distance From Top In. (mm) (2) Resistance (Ohms)
"F" 1.9 (48) 3
1/2 Full 6.9 (175) 33
"E" 11.4 (290) 110
(1) See Fig 1.
(2) Approximate readings.
  1. Remove fuel gauge sending unit. See FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect three 1.5-volt dry-cell batteries together in series. See Fig 1. Connect negative lead from dry-cell assembly to terminal No. 1 of fuel gauge sending unit connector. Connect positive lead of dry cell assembly, through a 3.4-watt test bulb, to terminal No. 3.
  2. Connect negative lead of a voltmeter to terminal No. 1 and positive lead to terminal No. 2. See Fig 1. Measure voltage as fuel gauge sending unit float is lowered from top to bottom position. Voltage should rise. If voltage does not change as specified, check fuel gauge sending unit resistance.
  3. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between terminals No. 1 and 2, of fuel gauge sending unit connector while moving float to various positions. See FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT RESISTANCE TESTS  table. If resistance readings are not as specified, replace fuel gauge sending unit.
