April 5, 2026: LEMON Manuals is launched! Read the announcement.

Valve Clearance: Es300

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain engine coolant. Disconnect accelerator cable and Throttle Valve (TV) cable (A/T) from throttle linkage. Remove airflow meter, air cleaner and intake air hose as an assembly.
  2. Remove center valley cover. Remove emission control valve assembly located above center valley. Disconnect hoses and ground straps from air intake chamber (upper intake manifold). Disconnect cold start injector connector and pipe union (catch fuel spillage with shop towel).
  3. Remove engine hanger and air intake chamber stay (brace). Remove EGR pipe. Disconnect electrical connectors and hoses as necessary and remove air intake chamber and gasket. Disconnect electrical connectors from following components: left bank injectors, engine oil level sensor, oil pressure switch, A/C compressor, alternator and water temperature sensor (for hydraulic cooling fan).
  4. At left engine wiring harness, remove 2 bolts and disconnect 5 clamps securing harness. Move harness aside. Disconnect electrical connectors from following components: right bank injectors, engine coolant temperature sender (for gauge), oxygen sensor and power steering pump. At right engine wiring harness, remove 2 bolts and disconnect 2 clamps securing harness. Move harness aside.
  5. Disconnect spark plug wires from plugs. Remove cylinder head covers. Set cylinder No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke (rotate crankshaft until pulley groove is aligned with "0" mark on timing belt cover). Ensure cylinder No. 1 intake valve lifters are loose and exhaust valve lifters are tight. If lifters are not as specified, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees.
  6. Measure and record clearance on intake valves of cylinders No. 1 and 6, and exhaust valves of cylinders No. 2 and 3. See Fig 1-3. Rotate crankshaft 240 degrees (2/3 of a revolution). Measure and record clearance on intake valves of cylinders No. 2 and 3, and exhaust valves of cylinders No. 4 and 5.
  7. Rotate crankshaft pulley another 240 degrees (2/3 of a revolution). Measure and record clearance on intake valves of cylinders No. 4 and 5, and exhaust valves of cylinders No. 1 and 6.
  8. Compare actual clearance with specified clearance. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS (ES300) table. If clearance is within specification, go to step 12). If clearance is not within specification, rotate crankshaft until camshaft lobe of valve to be adjusted is facing upward, away from lifter shim.
    VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS

    Application (1) In. (mm)
    Exhaust .011-.015 (.27-.37)
    Intake .005-.009 (.13-.23)
    (1) Adjust valves with engine cold.
  9. Rotate adjustment shim until notch is at a 90-degree angle to camshaft (perpendicular), facing spark plug. Using Valve Lifter Press (SST 09248-05011), press valve lifter downward. See Fig 4. Install Valve Lifter Stopper (SST 09248-05021) between camshaft and valve lifter. Remove valve lifter press. Using a small screwdriver and magnet, remove adjusting shim.
  10. Using a micrometer, measure thickness of shim removed. Replace removed shim with a shim of different thickness to bring valve clearance to specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS (ES300) table.
  11. Shims are available in thicknesses of .0984-.1299" (2.50-3.30 mm), in increments of .002" (.05 mm). To install shim, press downward on valve lifter using valve lifter press. Remove valve lifter stopper. Recheck valve clearance after shim is installed.
  12. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW gaskets at air intake chamber. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE at the end of this article.
