Speedometer System Test

  1. If tachometer and fuel gauge operate, go to next step. If tachometer and fuel gauge do not operate, disconnect connector "B" from back of instrument cluster. See Figure. Check for open circuit between ground and terminal No. 10. See Figure. If circuit is okay, replace instrument cluster computer. See Figure.
  2. If odometer and twin trip meter do not operate, go to next step. If odometer and twin trip meter operate, replace character plate. See Figure. If speedometer still does not operate, replace instrument cluster computer.
  3. Disconnect connector "B" from back of instrument cluster. See Figure. At instrument cluster connector "B", connect voltmeter positive lead to terminal No. 13 and negative lead to terminal No. 15. See Figure. Shift transmission into Neutral. Raise and support vehicle with one front wheel off of ground. Turn ignition on. Rotate front wheel.
  4. If voltage alternates between zero and 12 volts, replace instrument cluster computer. See Figure. If voltage does not alternate between zero and 12 volts, check VSS. See VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) TEST  under COMPONENT TESTING. If VSS is okay, repair circuit between VSS and instrument cluster.
