Anti-Lock Brake System: Operation

The ABS functions as a standard brake system until the wheels lock. When the wheels lock, short pedal pulsations occur in rapid succession. This indicates that the system is operating. The vehicle will stop faster if you keep pressing the brake pedal with constant force.

When the ignition is turned on, an ABS indicator light on the instrument cluster will comes on for 3 seconds as a bulb test. A primary check is performed each time the engine is started, and when initial vehicle speed exceeds 4 MPH. If the brake pedal is pressed before the vehicle speed exceeds 4 MPH, the primary check will not occur until the brake pedal is released.

WARNING: Before servicing, read ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.
