Speed Sensor Diagnostics

NOTE: While diagnosing speed sensors, ABS functions like a conventional brake system.
  1. Ensure battery voltage is about 12 volts. Turn ignition off. Using jumper wire, connect DLC1 terminals Ts and E1. Start engine. Ensure ABS warning light flashes. If ABS warning light does not flash, see TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Drive vehicle straight ahead for several seconds at 28 MPH (45 km/h) or greater. Stop vehicle. Using another jumper wire, connect DLC1 terminals Tc and E1. See Figure. Read number of flashes at ABS warning light. If every sensor is okay, a normal code will be indicated (light flashes once every .25 second).
  3. If a malfunction is indicated, ABS warning light will begin flashing 2-digit code. First series of flashes indicates first digit of code. After a 1.5-second pause, second series of flashes will begin, indicating second digit of code.
  4. If 2 or more codes are stored, a 2.5-second pause will separate codes. After all codes are flashed, there will be a 4-second pause, then all codes will be repeated.
  5. Record diagnostic codes. Turn ignition off. Repair as necessary. See SPEED SENSOR DIAGNOSTIC CODES. Remove jumper wires from DLC1. Clear diagnostic codes. See CLEARING CODES under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
