Fuel Gauge Sending Unit Test
- Remove fuel gauge sending unit. Connect three 1.5-volt dry-cell batteries together in series. At fuel gauge sending unit connector, connect positive lead from dry-cell assembly to terminal No. 2, with a 3.4-watt test light in this circuit. See Fig 1. Connect negative lead to terminal No. 3.
- While moving sending unit float up and down, measure voltage across terminals no. 2 and 3 of sending unit connector. As float is lowered, voltage should increase.
- If voltage does not increase, replace sending unit. If voltage increases, measure resistance between terminals No. 2 and 3 while moving float up and down. If resistance is as specified, sending unit is okay. If resistance is not as specified, replace sending unit. See FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT RESISTANCE TEST table.
