Pre-Trouble Shooting Inspection

  1. Open driver's door. Ensure all other doors are closed. Read the rest of this step so that you can perform the following 30-second and 10-second procedures without stopping to read them (procedures must be performed without stopping).

    • 30-Second Procedure

Using ignition key transmitter, lock and unlock doors 10 times within 30 seconds (lock and unlock counts as one time). Leave doors locked and unlocked for intervals of about one second.
    • 10-Second Procedure

Within 2 seconds of locking and unlocking doors the tenth time, press and hold ignition key transmitter button for 10 seconds, noting how many times all doors are locked and unlocked within the 10 seconds. Perform these 30-second and 10-second procedures now.
  2. Perform this step based on how the system operated:

    • Door Locks Did Not Operate

Remote system is faulty. See TROUBLE SHOOTING for system diagnosis.
    • Doors Locked & Unlocked Once

      Go to next step.
    • Doors Locked & Unlocked Twice

Transmitter and ROM (in remote door lock ECU) are not compatible. Replace transmitter and ROM.
    • Doors Locked & Unlocked 3 Times

Transmitter is faulty. Go to TRANSMITTER BATTERY TEST under TESTING.
  3. Close all doors. Disconnect antenna cable from remote door lock ECU. See ELECTRICAL COMPONENT LOCATIONS under DESCRIPTION & OPERATION. Insert ignition key (transmitter) into antenna hole in door lock ECU, but do not let ignition key touch the ECU case (transmitter will be grounded). See Fig 1.
  4. Press transmitter button. If all doors lock and unlock, go to next step. If all doors do not lock and unlock, problem is in antenna circuit. Go to ANTENNA CIRCUIT TEST under TESTING.
  5. Remove ignition key from ECU case. Turn radio on and tune it to 94.9 FM. If a radio station is broadcasting on 94.9 FM, go to next step. If no broadcast is heard, push transmitter button. If noise is heard from radio while pressing button, malfunction is in remote system. See TROUBLE SHOOTING for system diagnosis. If noise is not heard, inspect transmitter. Go to TRANSMITTER BATTERY TEST under TESTING.
  6. Tune a portable radio to 94.9 FM. Take radio inside of a building so that it will be free from the influence of FM broadcasts. Press the transmitter button. If noise is heard from radio while pressing button, malfunction is in remote system. See TROUBLE SHOOTING for system diagnosis. If noise is not heard, inspect transmitter. Go to TRANSMITTER BATTERY TEST under TESTING.
