Diagnosis & Repair (Using OBD-II Scan Tester)

  1. Remove EVAP VSV. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between VSV terminals. With VSV temperature at 68°F (20°C), resistance should be 30-34 ohms. Measure resistance between each terminal and body of valve. Resistance should be infinite. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace VSV.
  2. Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage to VSV terminals. Air from port "E" should exhaust out port "F". See Figure. Disconnect jumper wires. Air should not exhaust out port "F". If VSV does not operate as specified, replace VSV. If VSV operates as specified, go to next step.
  3. Access ECM behind glove box. Connect Check Harness "A" (SST 09990-01000) to ECM. See TEST PREPARATION under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 51 (Green/Black wire) at ECM "B" connector. See Figure. If voltage is 9-14 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 9-14 volts, check for open or short circuit between main relay and ECM. Repair wiring as necessary.
  4. Check all EVAP system related vacuum hose connections. Repair as necessary. If hose connections are okay, check charcoal canister. See EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. Replace as necessary. If canister is okay, replace ECM and retest.
