Test 7: Speedometer Does Not Work

  1. Test drive and check odometer operation. If odometer is bad, go to next step. If odometer is okay, check trip meter operation. If trip meter is okay, replace speedometer and retest. If trip meter is bad, go tostep 4).
  2. Disconnect instrument panel connector "A". Raise and support vehicle. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between connector "A" terminal No. 13 and No. 14. Voltage should vary between zero volts and battery voltage while rotating driveshaft. If voltage is as specified, replace circuit plate and retest. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Check Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). See VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS)  under COMPONENT TESTS. If VSS is bad, replace VSS and retest. If VSS is okay, repair wiring between VSS and instrument panel.
  4. Remove instrument panel. Using jumper wires, connect connector terminals A2, A13, A14 and A23 to instrument panel terminals. Raise and support vehicle. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between connector "A" terminal No. 13 and No. 14. Voltage should vary between zero volts and battery voltage while rotating driveshaft. If voltage is not as specified, replace circuit plate and retest. If voltage is as specified, replace speedometer and retest.
