Test 6: Neutral Start Switch Circuit

NOTE: Neutral start switch may also be called park/neutral position switch.
  1. If starter operates with shift lever in any position except Park and Neutral, check for fault in starter circuit. See STARTER article. If starter operates with shift lever in Park and Neutral only, check input signal circuit of neutral start switch. See INPUT SIGNAL CIRCUITS .
  2. If input signal circuit is okay, perform next procedure listed in DIAGNOSIS BY SYMPTOM  table under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If input signal circuit is not okay, remove cruise control ECU, but leave electrical connector(s) attached.
  3. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 2 of cruise control ECU connector. See Figure. voltage should be less than one volt. With shift lever in any other position, battery voltage should be present. With lever in Drive, battery voltage should be present. With lever in any other position, voltage should be less than one volt. On all models, if voltage is as specified, perform next procedure listed in DIAGNOSIS BY SYMPTOM  table under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  4. If voltage is not as specified, check for faulty circuit between cruise control ECU and park/neutral switch. Repair circuit if necessary. If circuit is okay, replace cruise control ECU.
