Valve Clearance: Es300
- Remove right fender apron seal. Drain engine coolant. Remove engine cover. Remove spark plug wires. Remove accelerator and A/T throttle cables. Disconnect Throttle Position (TP) sensor connector. Disconnect Idle Air Control (IAC) valve connector. Disconnect EGR gas temperature sensor and EGR valve position sensor connectors. Disconnect ACIS, EVAP and EGR vacuum switching valve connectors. Remove DLC1 connector from bracket on intake air control valve.
- Remove nuts and disconnect power steering hose from No. 1 engine hanger. See Fig 1. Disconnect PCV hose and remove PCV from right cylinder head. Disconnect ground strap and cable from ACIS intake air control valve. Disconnect ground cable from air intake chamber. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose from air intake chamber. Remove 2 water bypass hoses and air assist hose from throttle body.
- Remove EVAP hose from pipe on emission control valve set. Remove vacuum hoses from ACIS vacuum tank. Disconnect engine wire clamp from emission control valve set. Remove bolts and No. 1 engine hanger. Remove bolts and air intake chamber stay. Remove nuts, No. 2 EGR pipe and gaskets. Remove bolts, nuts and intake chamber assembly and gasket.
- Remove ignition coils. Set coils aside in order of removal for installation reference. Disconnect radiator inlet hose. Remove spark plugs. Remove valve covers.
- Rotate crankshaft clockwise until piston No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure groove on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on timing belt cover. Cylinder No. 1 intake and exhaust valve lifters should be loose. See Fig 2. If lifters are not loose, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees and realign crankshaft pulley.
- Measure and record clearance of intake valves for cylinders No. 1 and 6, and exhaust valves for cylinders No. 2 and 3. Rotate crankshaft 240 degrees (2/3 of a revolution). Measure and record clearance of intake valves for cylinders No. 2 and 3, and exhaust valves for cylinders No. 4 and 5.
- Rotate crankshaft pulley another 240 degrees (2/3 of a revolution). Measure and record clearance of intake valves for cylinders No. 4 and 5, and exhaust valves for cylinders No. 1 and 6.
- Compare measured clearance with specified clearance. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE (ES300) . If clearance is within specification, go to step 12). If clearance is not within specification, rotate crankshaft until camshaft lobe of valve to be adjusted is facing upward, away from shim.VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS
Application In. (mm) Intake .006-.010 (.15-.25) Exhaust .010-.014 (.25-.36) NOTE: If Valve Lifter Stopper (SST 09248-05420) is inserted too deeply, it will get pinched by shim. To prevent pinching, inset Valve Lifter Stopper (SST 09248-05420) gently from intake side of cylinder head at a slight angle. - Using a screwdriver, rotate valve lifter until notch on lifter is at a 90-degree angle to camshaft (perpendicular), facing centerline of valve. Using Valve Lifter Press (SST 09248-05410), press valve lifter downward. See Fig 3.
- Position Valve Lifter Stopper (SST 09248-05420) between camshaft and valve lifter to keep valve lifter held down. Remove valve lifter press. Using a small screwdriver and magnet, remove shim. Select a shim of appropriate thickness. See SELECTING SHIMS under VALVE CLEARANCE.
- Place shim onto valve lifter with imprinted numbers facing down. Press downward on valve lifter using valve lifter press, and remove valve lifter stopper. Recheck valve clearance to ensure it is correct. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE (ES300) .
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW gaskets at air intake chamber and EGR pipe. Remove old valve cover seal packing material. Install NEW Seal Packing (08826-00080) material. See Fig 4. Use NEW gaskets as necessary. Refill cooling system. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
