Piston & Rod Assembly

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2000 Lexus SC 400, 2000 Lexus LS 400, 2000 Lexus GS 400, 1999 Lexus SC 400, and 1999 Lexus LS 400. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Ensure connecting rod and connecting rod cap are marked with matching cylinder number for reassembly reference. Note that piston must be installed with front mark positioned in relation to outside mark on connecting rod.
NOTE: Right piston contains 2 cavities for front mark, and left piston contains one cavity for front mark. Reference to right and left indicates sides as viewed from rear of engine (drive plate end).
  2. When removing piston from connecting rod, remove snap rings from piston. Heat piston to 140°F (60°C) in water. Remove piston pin. Separate piston from connecting rod.
  3. Using caliper, measure connecting rod bolt outside diameter just above threads. Replace connecting rod bolt if outside diameter is less than .2756" (7.000 mm).
  4. Ensure piston pin diameter is within specification. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  5. Ensure connecting rod pin bushing bore diameter, crankpin bore diameter, bend and twist are within specification. See CONNECTING RODS  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  6. Bushing in connecting rod can be replaced if bore diameter is not within specification. Ensure bushing oil hole aligns with connecting rod oil hole. Hone bushing to obtain correct piston pin-to-rod clearance.
  7. To reassemble, install NEW snap ring in piston. Install piston on connecting rod so front mark on top of piston aligns with outside mark on connecting rod. Heat piston to 140°F (60°C) in water. Coat piston pin with engine oil. Install piston pin and remaining NEW snap ring.
CAUTION: Installation direction of piston on connecting rod is different for left and right sides. Pistons have an "R" or "L" index mark to indicate installation position on connecting rods. Reference to right and left indicates sides as viewed from rear of engine (drive plate end).
