Park/Neutral Position Switch
- Inspect PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) switch assembly using the following steps:
- Apply the parking brake and turn the ignition switch to ON.
- Depress the brake pedal and check that the engine starts only when the shift lever is set in "N" or "P" position.
- Check that the back-up light is lit and the reverse warning buzzer sounds only when the shift lever is set in "R" position.
- If a failure is found, check the PNP switch for continuity. See appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.
- Adjust PNP switch assembly using the following steps:
- Loosen the 2 bolts of PNP switch and set shift lever to the "N" position.
- Align the groove and neutral basic line. See Fig 1.
- Hold the switch in position and tighten 2 bolts to 44 INCH lbs. (5.0 N.m).
- After adjustment, perform inspection as described in previous step.
