Park/Neutral Position Switch

  1. Inspect PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) switch assembly using the following steps:
    1. Apply the parking brake and turn the ignition switch to ON.
    2. Depress the brake pedal and check that the engine starts only when the shift lever is set in "N" or "P" position.
    3. Check that the back-up light is lit and the reverse warning buzzer sounds only when the shift lever is set in "R" position.
    4. If a failure is found, check the PNP switch for continuity. See appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.
  2. Adjust PNP switch assembly using the following steps:
    1. Loosen the 2 bolts of PNP switch and set shift lever to the "N" position.
    2. Align the groove and neutral basic line. See Fig 1.
    3. Hold the switch in position and tighten 2 bolts to 44 INCH lbs. (5.0 N.m).
    4. After adjustment, perform inspection as described in previous step.
