Camshaft Position Sensor
Camshaft sensor consists of a magnet, iron core and pick-up coil. On GX470 and LX470, signal plate has one tooth on its outer circumference, and is mounted on left side camshaft timing pulley. On ES300, GS300, GS430, IS300, LS430 and SC430, signal plate has three teeth on its outer circumference, and is mounted on intake camshaft. On RX300, signal plate has three teeth on its outer circumference, and is mounted on camshaft timing pulley. On all models, as camshaft rotates, a protrusion on signal plate passes near pick-up coil. This induces AC voltage in pick-up coil. ECM senses this voltage signal and interprets it as camshaft position.
The ECM uses input signal for determining ignition timing (spark advance) and for controlling fuel injection system, idle speed control system, heated oxygen sensor system and intake air control valve system. On vehicles equipped with VVT, it also controls that function. For camshaft position location see CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR LOCATION table.
