Draining & Refilling

  1. Remove drain plug to drain fluid.
  2. If transmission oil filter is to be changed, remove oil pan using the following steps:
    1. Remove 20 bolts. See Fig 1.
    2. Remove oil pan gasket.
  3. Clean transmission oil pan using magnets located in oil pan and use them to collect any steel chips. Look carefully at chips and particles in pan and on magnet to anticipate the type of wear you will find in transmission. Steel is magnetic and typically results from bearing, gear and clutch plate wear. Brass is non-magnetic and typically results from bushing wear. Remove and clean magnets in pan of all metal particles.
  4. Remove 4 bolts, oil filter and "O" ring. See Fig 2.
  5. Install oil filter and new "O" ring.
  6. Install transmission oil pan using the following steps:
    1. Install 3 magnets in oil pan.
    2. Remove any packing material and take care to not drop oil on any of the contacting surfaces of transmission case and oil pan.
    3. Install new gasket and oil pan.
    4. Install 20 bolts and tighten bolts to specification. See Fig 1.
  7. Install drain plug with new gasket. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  8. With engine off, add new fluid through oil filler tube.
  9. Start engine and move gearshift lever through all positions. Place gearshift lever back into Park. Check fluid level. Add fluid to bring level up to COOL mark on dipstick.
  10. Recheck fluid level when engine and transmission reaches operating temperature of 158-176°F (70-80°C). Add fluid up to HOT mark on dipstick. See FLUID CAPACITIES .
