Test No. 17: Flash Feature Does Not Operate (With Daytime Running Lights)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Avalon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: When handling halogen headlight bulb, DO NOT scratch or drop the bulb, as bulb is pressurized and may burst. DO NOT touch glass part of headlight bulb with your hands. Hold headlight bulb only by plastic or metal case.
  1. Remove and examine headlight bulb which is not operating. If headlight bulb is defective, replace headlight bulb and recheck headlight operation. If headlight bulb is okay, check wiring harness and electrical connectors. See HEADLIGHTS in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair wiring harness or electrical connectors as necessary. After repairs, perform confirmation test. See CONFIRMATION TEST .
  2. Depending on which headlight is inoperative, check HEAD LH UPR fuse (10-amp) for driver side high beam headlight or HEAD RH UPR fuse (10-amp) for passenger side high beam headlight. Fuses are in engine compartment relay block No. 2 located in front of coolant reservoir and beside windshield washer fluid tank at right front corner of engine compartment. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is defective, repair short in wiring between appropriate fuse and headlight. See HEADLIGHTS in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  3. Check DRL (7.5-amp) fuse. DRL fuse is located in engine compartment junction block located in front of shock tower on left side of engine compartment. See Figure. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is defective, repair short in wiring between DRL fuse and DRL relay No. 3, fog light relay (if equipped) and/or headlight control relay. See HEADLIGHTS in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  4. Check DRL relay No. 2, DRL relay No. 3 and DRL relay No. 4. All three relays are located in engine compartment relay block No. 2 located in front of coolant reservoir and beside windshield washer fluid tank at right front corner of engine compartment. See DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT RELAYS  under COMPONENT TESTS. If all relays are okay, go to next step. Replace any defective relay as necessary. After repairs, perform confirmation test. See CONFIRMATION TEST .
  5. Check Red/Black wire between body control ECU 25-pin connector B4 terminal No. 10 and terminal No. 3 of DRL relay No. 2. See Figure. Check wire harness and connectors between battery and DRL relay No. 2. Also check wire harness and connectors between DRL relay No. 2, DRL relay No. 3 and DRL relay No. 4. See HEADLIGHTS in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If wire harness and connectors are okay, go to next step. Repair or replace wiring or connectors as necessary. After repairs, perform confirmation test. See CONFIRMATION TEST .
  6. Check headlight dimmer switch. See HEADLIGHT DIMMER SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS under STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES - AVALON article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If headlight dimmer switch is okay, go to next step. If headlight dimmer switch is defective, replace light control switch. After repairs, perform confirmation test. See CONFIRMATION TEST .
  7. Check wiring harnesses and electrical connectors between body control ECU and DRL relay No. 2, between body control ECU and dimmer switch, between DRL relay No. 2 and left and right HEAD UPR fuses (10-amp), between DRL relay No. 2 and battery, between right HEAD UPR fuse (10-amp) and DRL relay No. 3, between left HEAD UPR fuse (10-amp) and headlights, between headlights and DRL relay No. 4, between DRL relays No. 3 and No. 4, between DRL relays No. 3 and No. 4 and DRL fuse (7.5-amp), and all ground connections. See HEADLIGHTS in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If wiring harnesses or electrical connectors are defective, repair as necessary. After repairs, perform confirmation test. See CONFIRMATION TEST .
