Rear Axle Shaft: Replacement

HINT:

  1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL 
    1. Remove the 10 bolts and ornament.
    2. Remove the 5 nuts and wheel.
  2. LOOSEN REAR AXLE SHAFT LH NUT (See  REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION  ) 
  3. DISCONNECT DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSY REAR LH 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the brake cylinder from the axle carrier.

    2. Support the brake cylinder securely.
  4. REMOVE REAR DISC 
  5. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE ASSY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  6. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER LH (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  7. DISCONNECT PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSY NO. 3 (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  8. DISCONNECT TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSY LH (See  REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  ) 
  9. DISCONNECT REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 1 LH (See  REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  ) 
  10. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  11. DISCONNECT UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSY REAR LH 
    1. Using SST, disconnect the upper suspension arm from the axle carrier.

      SST 09628-0001 1

      NOTE:
      • Be careful not to damage the dust cover. 
      • Support the axle carrier.

  12. DISCONNECT REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 2 LH 
  13. REMOVE REAR WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR NO. 2 LH 
    1. Using a screwdriver, pry out the dust deflector.
  14. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and nuts.
    2. Mount the axle carrier in a vise.

      HINT:

      Use a set of soft jaws in the vise to protect the axle carrier.

      NOTE: Do not excessively tighten the vise.

    3. Using SST, remove the axle shaft from the axle carrier.

    4. Remove the backing plate.
    5. Using SST, remove the bearing inner race from the axle shaft.

      SST 09950-00020, 09950-60010 (09951-00480), 09950-40011 (09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04030, 09954-04020, 09955-04041)

      NOTE: Be careful not to damage the axle shaft.

  15. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH SNAP RING 
    1. Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring.

  16. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH BEARING 
    1. Using SST and a press, press out the shaft bearing from the axle carrier.

      SST 09950-60010 (09951-00650), 09950-70010 (09951-07100)

  17. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH BEARING 
    1. Using SST and a press, press in a new axle shaft bearing to the axle carrier.

      SST 09527-17011, 09950-60020 (09951-00810), 09950-70010 (09951-07100)

  18. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH SNAP RING 
    1. Using snap ring pliers, install the snap ring to the axle carrier.
  19. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH 
    1. Install the backing plate with the 2 bolts and nuts.

      Torque: 59 N.m (600 kgf.cm, 43 ft.lbf) 

    2. Using SST and a press, press in the axle shaft to the axle carrier.

      SST 09527-17011, 09950-60010 (09951-00650), 09950-70010 (09951-07100)

  20. INSTALL REAR WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR NO.2 LH 
    1. Align the speed sensor installation hole of the dust deflector and that of the axle carrier.
    2. Using SST and a hammer, tap in a new dust deflector to the axle carrier.

      SST 09950-60020 (09951-01030), 09950-70010 (09951-07100)

  21. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO.2 LH (See  REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  ) 
  22. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSY REAR LH (See  REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  ) 
  23. CONNECT TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSY LH (See  REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  ) 
  24. FULLY TIGHTEN UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSY REAR LH (See  REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  ) 
  25. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  26. CONNECT REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 1 LH (See  REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  ) 
  27. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSY NO. 3 (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  28. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER LH (See  INSTALLATION 
  29. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE ASSY (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  30. INSPECT BEARING BACKLASH 
    1. Using a dial indicator near the center of the axle shaft, check the backlash in the bearing shaft direction.

      Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 in.) 

      If the backlash is greater than the maximum, replace the bearing.

  31. INSPECT AXLE HUB DEVIATION 
    1. Using a dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle shaft outside the hub bolt.

      Maximum: 0.07 mm (0.0028 in.) 

      If the backlash is greater than the maximum, replace the bearing.

  32. INSTALL REAR DISC 
  33. CONNECT DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSY REAR LH 
    1. Connect the brake cylinder to the steering knuckle with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 104 N.m (1,065 kgf.cm, 77 ft.lbf)

  34. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE SHOE LINING THICKNESS (See  INSPECTION  ) 
  35. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO.2 LH (See  REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  ) 
  36. INSTALL REAR WHEEL 
    1. Install the wheel with the 5 nuts.

      Torque: 103 N.m (1,050 kgf.cm, 76 ft.lbf) 

    2. Install the ornament with the 10 bolts.

      Torque: 20 N.m (204 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) 

  37. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT (See  ADJUSTMENT  ) 
  38. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL (See  ANTI-LOCK  )
