Steering Column ASSY: Overhaul

  1. SEPARATE BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL 
  2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  3. REMOVE SWITCH & VOLUME CASE (See  CRUISE CONTROL  ) 
  4. REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR (See  CRUISE CONTROL  ) 
  5. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER No. 2 
  6. REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSY 
    NOTE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.
    1. Using a torx socket wrench, loosen the 2 torx screws.

      HINT:

      Loosen the 2 screws until groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.

    2. Pull the horn button assy from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.

      CAUTION:
      • When storing the horn button assy, keep the upper surface of the horn button assy facing upward.
      • Never disassemble the horn button assy.
        NOTE: When removing the horn button assy, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

  7. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSY 
    1. Disconnect the connector.
    2. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
    3. Place match-marks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.
    4. Using SST, remove the steering wheel.

      SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)

  8. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY (See  INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY  ) 
  9. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER LOWER 
    1. Remove the 3 screws and steering column cover lower.
  10. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER UPPER 
  11. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY (See  SPIRAL CABLE  ) 
    NOTE: Do not disassemble the spiral cable or apply oil to it.
  12. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Disconnect the 4 connectors.
    2. Disconnect the airbag connector.
    3. Remove the 3 screws and turn signal switch assy.
  13. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY No. 1 (See  INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY  ) 
  14. REMOVE HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT No. 4 
  15. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSY 
    1. Place matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assy and control valve shaft.
    2. Loosen the bolt "A" and remove the bolt "B" and disconnect the steering sliding yoke sub-assy.

    4. Disconnect the connectors.
    5. Remove the brake pedal return spring.
    6. Loosen the hole cover clamp.
    7. Remove the 2 column assembly set bolts, 2 column assembly set nuts and steering column assembly.

  16. REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Remove the bolt "A"and steering sliding yoke sub-assy.
  17. REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY COIL (See  ENGINE IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM  ) 
    1. Remove the screw and transponder key coil.
  18. REMOVE KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSY 
  19. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY NO. 2 
    1. Place matchmarks on the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly and main shaft.
    2. Remove the bolt and No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.

  20. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSY UPPER 
    1. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
    2. Using a 4 - 5 mm (0.16 - 0.20 in.) drill, drill into the 2 bolts.
    3. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and column upper bracket.

  21. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION 
    1. Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly.

    2. If necessary, replace key cylinder.
      1. Place the ignition key at the ACC position.
      2. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the key cylinder.
      3. Install a new key cylinder.

        HINT:

        Make sure the ignition key is at the ACC position.

  22. INSPECT IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY (See  IGNITION SWITCH  ) 
    1. If necessary, replace ignition switch.
      1. Remove the 2 screws and ignition protector.
      2. Remove the 2 screws and ignition switch.
      3. Install a new ignition switch with the 2 screws.
      4. Install the ignition protector with the 2 screws.
  23. INSPECT UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSY (See  IGNITION SWITCH  ) 
  24. INSPECT KEY INTER LOCK SOLENOID (See  SHIFT LOCK SYSTEM  ) 
    1. If necessary, replace key un-lock warning switch assy with key inter lock solenoid.
      1. Remove the 2 screws and key un-lock warning switch assy with key inter lock solenoid.
      2. Install a new key un-lock warning switch assy with key inter lock solenoid with the 2 screws.
  25. INSPECT TRANSPONDER KEY COIL 
    1. If necessary, replace transponder key coil.
    2. If necessary, replace transponder key amplifier.
      1. Remove the screw and transponder key amplifier.
      2. Install a new transponder key amplifier with the screw.
  26. REMOVE TILT STEERING SLIDER SUB-ASSY 
    1. Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 4 bolts, 2 washers and tilt steering slider sub-assy.
    2. Remove the 4 bushings, 2 plates from tilt steering slider sub-assy.

  27. REMOVE MULTIPLEX TILT & TELESCOPIC ECU 
    1. Remove the 2 screws and multiplex tilt & telescopic ECU.
  28. INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT & TELESCOPIC ECU 
    1. Install the multiplex tilt & telescopic ECU with the 2 screws.
  29. INSTALL TILT STEERING SLIDER SUB-ASSY 
    1. Install 2 new plates and 4 new bushings to the tilt steering slider sub-assy in the direction shown in the illustration.

      HINT:

      Install the bushings with their cuts facing downward.

    2. Using a hexagon wrench, install the tilt steering slider sub-assy with the 2 washers and 4 bolts.

      Torque: 23 N.m (230 kgf.cm, 17 ft.lbf) 

      HINT:

      • When replacing a tilt steering slider sub-assy with new one, apply grease on the removed tilt steering slider sub-assy to the shaft of the new tilt steering slider sub-assy.
      • Install the tilt steering slider sub-assy with the bolt portion of the tilt slider faced downward.
      • Do not let the grease be stuck on the thread part of the bolt in order to prevent the bolt from slipping.

  31. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSY UPPER 
    1. Install the column upper bracket with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
    2. Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.

  32. INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY No. 2 
    1. Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 shaft and main shaft.
    2. Install the bolt.

      Torque: 35 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf)

  33. INSTALL KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSY 
  34. INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY COIL 
    1. Install the transponder key coil with the screw.
  35. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Temporarily install the steering sliding yoke sub-assy with the bolt "A".
  36. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSY 
    1. Install the steering column assembly with the 2 column assembly set bolts and 2 column assembly set nuts.

      Torque: 25 N.m (260 kgf.cm, 19 ft.lbf) 

    2. Tighten the hole cover clamp.
    3. Install the brake pedal return spring.
    4. Connect the connectors.

  37. CONNECT STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assy control valve shaft.
    2. Install the bolt "B" and torque the bolt "A".

      Torque: 35 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf)

  38. INSTALL HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT No. 4 
  39. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY No. 1 (See  INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY  ) 
  40. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY (See  SPIRAL CABLE  ) 
  41. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Install the turn signal switch assy with spiral cable sub-assy with the 3 screws.
    2. Connect the airbag connector.
    3. Connect the 4 connectors.
  42. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER UPR 
  43. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER LWR 
    1. Install the steering column cover lower with the 3 screws.
  44. INSTALL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  45. CENTER SPIRAL CABLE (See  SPIRAL CABLE  ) 
  46. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSY 
    1. Align the match-marks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
    2. Install the wheel set nut.

      Torque: 50 N.m (510 kgf.cm, 37 ft.lbf) 

    3. Connect the connector.
  47. INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSY 
    NOTE:
    • Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.
    • Make sure the horn button assy is installed to the specified torque.
    • If the horn button assy has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the horn button assy with a new one.
    • When installing the horn button assy, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.
      1. Connect the airbag connector.
      2. Install the horn button assy after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx screw is caught on the screw case.
      3. Using a torx socket wrench, torque the 2 screws.

        Torque: 8.8 N.m (90 kgf.cm, 78 in.lbf)

  48. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER No. 2 
  49. INSTALL STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR (See  STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR  ) 
  50. INSTALL SWITCH & VOLUME CASE (See  STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR  ) 
  51. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT 
  52. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
